I was browsing in the shop today and overheard a member of staff and customer complaining about people coming into the shop with the intention of buying books and selling them on/ or are collectors. Apparently that isn?t the type of customer they want, because sometimes they haggle. Perhaps the reason people ask for a bit of money off is because the prices in this shop are very high!! Just because it says ?bookshop? on the door doesn?t make it better than any other charity shop - all the books are donated, you haven?t had to pay for them like a regular second-hand bookshop, nor do you have anything like the same business rates. The prices in there don?t reflect the real market value of the books, they?re all over the place. I very rarely haggle, but as the prices in there were so high I was considering asking for a few quid off the total if I bought in bulk. But as I heard that conversation I felt unwelcome and left. I sell books for a living and I go back to the same shops several times a month, sellers should be your best customers. You can moan that someone wants a few quid off a £20 book, but when is the next customer going to stroll past who actually wants that specific book? Surely it?s better for cash flow to sell them on at slightly lower prices. And sure, it's for charity....one where the CEO earns £200,000 per year.
