The shop itself was really good. Good choice, different layout - a nice change from most music shops. There was one member of staff that was really nice & helpful. There was, however, one extremely rude member of staff. Myself and two friends were visiting as two of us were in the market for a new guitar, one electric one acoustic. We had been in there a while, maybe 20-30 minutes when we all found ourselves in the acoustic room. We were the only people in the shop, staff aside, and we spontaneously all play the same song. We played maybe half a verse (we obviously weren't going to play the whole song for gods sake) and the rude member of staff came in waving his arms saying "This is not a rehearsal room. We can't have you doing that in here." Suffice to say we did not feel welcome anymore and left very shortly after due to the cold and awkward atmosphere that lingered after. Was it really worth losing 2 potential sales over? He was a young man and seemed stand-offish from the word go. I have felt too embarrassed to return and I just hope he no longer works there because other than that it's a cool shop.

Now, I'm not sure whether the use of 'Affects' in the name of this shop is intentional or not. I guess their name could be suggesting that sound affects everyone, rather than them incorrectly spelling 'effects'. That, plus the fact 'Sound Effects' is a bit of a boring name for a shop, means I'll give the owners the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the affects/effects argument. Name issues aside, Sound Affects is a modestly-sized music shop in Ormskirk that manages to fit rather a lot into their shop. The shop has a small but quite varied selection of guitars which are not particularly expensive, certainly no more than the larger shops in Liverpool, for example. They also stock a range of other instruments in the shop, such as bass guitars, ukuleles, drums and keyboards as well as various amps and accessories. The staff there are helpful and knowledgeable and they also offer a great tuition service for all instruments, which is perfect if you're looking to learn a new instrument but don't know your G chord from your C.
