Decent tasty food and a couple of real ales in an olde country pub.
It's well worth a stop or a trip out.

WOW!!! What an amazing little gem!! Tipped up on a Thursday lunch time and we were absolutely bound over by this lovely quaint eatery!! As soon as we walked in there was service & hospitality with a smile ?. We ordered the Ploughman?s & vegetarian platters, that were above & beyond our expectations!! Freshly prepared, great value home made grub!! The wine and beer also slipped down nicely, lovely beer garden if you fancy sitting outside. We cannot recommend the Kicking Donkey enough???. absolutely belting!!! Thank you

Absolutely awful ? never again!
Visited The Kicking Donkey and was shocked at the state of the place. Scruffy both inside and out ? sticky tables, cobwebs on the doors, and cakes left uncovered on the bar with flies buzzing around them. The décor was peeling and scruffy, adding to the overall neglected feel. The toilets were disgusting and clearly not maintained properly. Outside was no better ? the car park was full of weeds and strewn with old beer barrels that hadn?t been stored properly. The food was dreadful ? honestly the worst I?ve had in a long time. A thoroughly disappointing experience from start to finish. Won?t be returning and definitely wouldn?t recommend.
Here?s the constructive criticism- cakes were 100% uncovered for the duration of our meal. Old unsightly beers barrels were piled up in car park as you?ve acknowledged, unsighly large tall weeds all over the car park (certainly not strimmed for sometime like you?ve suggested), you wasn?t that busy at the time of visiting and the toilets weren?t cleaned properly. I did bring the complaint the attention of the staff, the fish tasted bland and fell apart easily, suggesting it may have been quickly defrosted rather than fresh fish which most decent restaurants would serve, the batter was completely overcooked and burnt, very dark brown appearance, which affected the texture leaving a burnt after taste, I would also suggest to drain off the cooking oil on the fish much more before placing on top of the chunky chips, that way, the customer doesn?t have to eat soggy greasy chips. The kids fish goujons were the same, so all of the batter was left and my little boy was hungry, so he actually ate the tiny rubber pieces inside the batter. My daughter left nearly all of the ham which she said it tasted funny, which looked slimy and I asked her not to eat that and she just ate the chips. The staff refunded just my meal as it was in my opinion inedible . It was too embarrassing asking them to refund the other two meals, which in hindsight, I maybe should have. So that?s some constructive criticism which by the tone of your reply which I don?t find very professional to say the least. It?s most certainly not an attack, it?s just the worst place we?ve visited in years from top to bottom.

We popped in with our dog on the off chance for Sunday lunch.
We were immediately made to feel very welcome and shown to a table in the busy dinning area.
Our drinks came very quickly and our food came quickly, we had starters and mains. One Sunday roast and one linguine. Both dishes were extremely tasty and great portion sizes. Our dog Chester had a big bowl of Sunday roast meats cut into small pieces. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and would definitely call again and recommend to friends and family.
Only downside was identifying who were staff as they wore their own clothes but they were extremely friendly and attentive. Well done Kicking Donkey.

Love this pub. First time I'd been last night and a big reason was because the menu looked authentic and not typical chain pub grub. It didn't disappoint. The beer was great and the food was 10/10. I had the whitebait and then the pork belly artichoke pasta. Loved the authenticity of the menu and the thought behind it. Will definitely come back. There aren't many authentic pubs like this left. Not around Ormskirk anyway. Give it a go.

Held a get-together here after a family funeral. The pub is normally closed on a Monday but the management opened especially for us. We had a beautiful buffet, which was topped up regularly. The landlord and his bar staff were attentive, and nothing was too much trouble.
Lovely beer garden, lots of seating in and out, loads of parking and lovely location.
Would highly recommend. Thank you for helping us out x

Stopped for lunch in the garden. Nice friendly service. Good selection of non alcoholic beers and lagers/cask. Vegetarian platter and sandwich were very nice. Great pub if you are passing.
