“I recommend it as the staff here seem to work in a very positive and supportive environment, so much so that when i was in today, I asked how my brother may find out more about volunteering. Unfortunately on this occasion I saw what a saviour complex the manager has, choosing to Ignore me because I addressed this particular question to her, ‘the manager’ and not one of the volunteers. The lady serving me was still learning to read the price of items so I assumed correctly that she was not the one involved in recruiting. The manager, when she finally acknowledged my presence, then further insulted me by sarcastically saying my brother should come and have a conversation with her himself. My brother does not live in Burnley ( I assumed due to the charity name that there may be other shops around) and secondly, he has been smothered and isolated by our parents his whole life and I have had the task recently of having to help him aquire support and learn skills he should have developed decades ago. He would unfortunately therefore still struggle to self initiate such a convo and due to autism, motivate himself to try something new - so I did not want him to go through the anxiety and preparation for such if he was to be then sent elsewhere, as he may then use it as an excuse to give up. So advocacy guidelines are always context and person dependent - and as someone who has grown up advocating and supporting a family member, I did not appreciate being treated as though I hadn’t the first clue about empowerment and self-advocacy. Sometimes even the more skilled support workers allow their egos to take over. So well done but also, we always have more to learn. Best be humble and respectful as you aren’t the only person on the planet who has supported people with learning difficulties. saviour mentalities are inherently disempowering - the woman in the till understood why I directed that particular question at the manager, even if the manager gets a kick out of insulting me by pretending she didtnt.”

“We needed a new single bed for one of our children. The store is large enough that they had several, and one was very suitable, and at a very reasonable price. The staff were also very helpful with loading the car, etc. I would definitely visit again.”
