What an absolute gem this place is!! Our first visit, we didn?t know what to expect. It?s in a relaxed setting by the river, with beautifully manicured gardens. The pub/restaurant is much larger than it first appears. There is an extensive range of beers, all served by very friendly staff. But the true diamond here is the food! We had a mixed ploughman?s and lambs liver and bacon. The ploughman?s was enormous, with everything that you can think of in it, all served on a large/full size dinner plate. There was so much, that the pate, cheese and ham sat proudly on top, all excellent quality. Then the lambs liver, it was amazing!! The menu says served with mash and veg - on ordering the question came, what potatoes - mash, chips, roast, new? Veg, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower! There was masses of lovely liver, potatoes and veg were all freshly prepared and cooked. All of this, with a large wine and a coke, with change from £30. If you enjoy good quality food, served in large operations at a reasonable price, this is the place for you! This was our first visit, but certainly will not be our last! I can?t wait to explore their menu further.

Not the usual friendly atmosphere when greeted. Our third visit over a year whilst on holiday. We were told no more food after 7:30pm even though it says it?s open until 11:00pm. We ordered steak and ale pie. With minutes later the kitchen assistant came out to us and said they had no more pie left, I?m sure this was because it takes too long to cook. So in the end ordered a half pound gourmet burger. Which came out very quickly to my surprise. It was awful. Overcooked burger as though it was pre cooked and warmed through again served in a dry bun and served with under cooked chips. Asked to order a desert very quickly with our main meal. It?s such a shame. Supposed to be a lovely relaxing evening out to a mc Donald?s fast track service of awful food and service. I have thirty five years of catering experience and had certainly put me off going back.

We came as a family of 7 on Thursday around 6pm. We were seated in the restaurant, we were the only ones in there. We went to the bar to order our drinks, because no came to us. We then went to order our food at the bar again because no one came to get our order. Staff were chatting, one was on her phone. Our food was delicious, fresh, tasty, good portions, compliments to the chef who was working that night. We often pop in for lunch and staff usually come to you for your order ? We never left a tip, they did nothing for that apart from bringing the food to the table. No checks to see if we were ok, no offer of menu for sweets, ignored really. 10/10 for food. Zero for staff, non attentive, too busy chatting.

First time here, I went for the salmon and prawn salad. I though this was going to be quite small, let me tell you it was not. The plate was full of salad and fish it also included new potatoes. The others went for lasagne, chips and peas and steak and ale pie, roasts and veg ( their was a lot of veg) they all said it was excellent. Compliments to the chef. All of the bar staff welcomed us with a smile. One of the bar staff ( Lisa I think I recall another staff member calling her) came across quite rude, but I let it go as it could of been a bad day. Our young waitress (summer) was brilliant, she delivered our food with such a friendly smile and warned us the plates were hot. She came back 5 minutes later too check the food was okay. What a lovely young lady. We sat in the restaurant which was all laid up nicely. We will definitely be retuning to the dog and duck.

Wasn?t sure what to expect, it was a last minute booking on Father?s Day and they had a vacancy for five and a dog! Tables outside with a gazebo and a singer setting up, but we?d elected an inside table as there was a chance of rain. Directed to our table which had a reserved sign. Table layout was spacious, distance between tables was good - most venues seem to cram the tables in to maximise profit. Roast diners of lamb, beef or turkey with roast pots and seasonal veg, there were about 10-12 other main courses covering pies, fish, salad and lasagna etch plus a selection of children?s meals. You go to the bar to order your food and drinks. I opted for the steak and ale pie, chips and peas, it said there was optional seasonal veg but they sent that out anyway. Daughter had half roast chicken and others the roast Turkey. The pie was a large portion, pastry thin and the meat plentiful and full of flavour, best I?ve had in ages, the chips large and crispy and the peas were ?..peas. All in all a great plate of food. Equally the other meals were generous potions, Turkey and roast potatoes almost filled the plate. The veg was well cooked, not over done and consisted of carrots, cauliflower and cabbage. More than we needed. All meals arrived together and hot, waitresses (2) were good, offered condiments and returned 10 mins later to check everything was ok. Plates cleared but not rushed to leave, declined desserts as we were too full. The bill came to £61.00 for five meals (not including drinks) when I enquired about the service charge, the owner told me it?s not included and declined to take it and politely asked me to pay our waitress direct. Must be a good place to work to have such an honest boss. Would we go back, definitely, would we recommend it, yes but don?t all book at once or we may find it harder to get a table!

Excellent family meal for 13 people on Saturday night... Amazing food, brilliant service and all at very reasonable prices. Have never been disappointed whenever visiting and this occasion was no exception. Steak and ale pie is a particular favourite, but all the food has a homecooked feel and quality, and portions are generous too. Definitely recommend.

Four of us stopped by on a walk and ordered pints of Doom Bar, which tasted off and were really cloudy. They agreed to change them but the next four were even worse with lumps of sediment floating in them. We took them back again, waited but no fresh beers were brought out. They would only refund two of the four beers. Very disappointing. Worst pub I?ve been to in Kent.

Our retirement group arranged an outing to the venue for lunch and entertainment. The pub is located close to the River Stour in delightful countryside. They offer a coach party menu with a good choice of options and we were not disappointed with the size of the portions or the quality of the food. The meat pie was especially popular served with chips and peas or fresh vegetables. They had also arranged an entertainer for us and Nick Bosworth played a selection of great music as we ate and livened it up for us to dance as we finished our meal. There were 58 of us and the friendly staff looked after us very well. Whether you are a group of friends, a couple or a coach party you can be sure of a friendly welcome and good food

Was so looking forward to returning to this venue but sadly a few of our group found the meal not up to the usual standard. Discreet mention to staff was ignored. Having said that we had an enjoyable afternoon with good entertainmen, cheering us up on a cold miserable day

I have always loved the dog and duck (I?m in there whilst writing this) it has excellent service, clean facilities and delicious food. The menu changes time to time though so I would recommend ordering in the restaurant but it?s an amazing country pub that I would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Our second visit. The food was very good, as was the service, although one has to order at the bar. Tab available. Beware the portions are very large - bowl of vegetables would serve four! Ploughman's exceedingly good value if you are hungry! Thoroughly enjoyable stay.

The food is always excellent at the dog and duck. I have now visited three times and had something different each time and all have been equally great We pretty much had the place to ourselves (just two of us) hence a slightly lower mark for atmosphere. The only negative was the two separate music sources being played, one via the restaurant speakers and one from the kitchen clashing and making it difficult to listen to or ignore.
