Ok so I should warn you all seriously that this hotel is a potential health hazard. Yes we did have a very pleasant chap at check in, very quick and efficient albeit he needs to get the management to supply him with some new white shirts and possibly a smart waistcoat. First impressions do count. The lift is out of order and judging by the old notice I'm guessing that's not a new problem. We were given a room on the top floor , fortunately we although in our 70's are fit and could manage the three sets of winding stairs to room 26. The different steep stairwells with numerous fire doors would not be negotiable easily for the unfit of any age. The room .......well it was a fair size and initially seemed ok , however on closer inspection it had many faults, there were only two power points at the rear of the table with the tea making facility. No mirror there, so no way of doing hair and makeup. The rug was dirty with what appeared to be toothpaste on it, in need of a proper clean! The towels were very clean and the bedding clean and acceptable. No the mattresses were not acceptable! This hotel has won Channel 4's Four in a bed !! It certainly would not win that now, they are disgusting! We didn't look until the morning we left and probably would not have stayed if we had looked sooner!! The bathroom was horrible, cold dirty in desperate need of a refurb . Yes there is an electric fan heater that's positioned to blow at the wall/window but believe me the less time you spend in there the better. The room was not serviced , we came back late on the Saturday to find beds unmade no tea/coffee or towels replaced. We notified reception as a matter of course, he offered to make our bed but we declined as we did it ourselves . Good location is about the best I can say about this hotel. Do not go by the website description. The boards that are up outside the hotel are in breach of the Trades Description Act. Breakfast was acceptable although we found it strange that the cups were melamine but the saucers were porcelain? If in any doubt about booking this hotel my personal advice is to avoid it

If you are looking for a ?retreat? this is not that. This is a beautiful old building with so much potential but the whole approach is lazy. Our room had stains on the carpet, cushions, walls, net curtains were nicotine yellow. The love had just been lost. With just a little effort this could be lovely, but for the price be grateful for a dry warm room...not clean though. We even got a free pair of socks left by the previous guest (used) in the cupboard. If you?ve booked and can?t get out of it don?t panic, but if you can change your plans for something a bit nicer I would...

When we got into the room, it had the below issues: - Shower doors were covered in soap scum and limescale. This clearly had not been cleaned. - Shower basin was absolutely filthy with dead skin and dirt. - Toilet had not been cleaned. Marks and stains all over the seat. - The sink was dirty with blue toothpaste marks all behind the taps as if someone had completely missed the basin. It also had toothpaste splatters all up the wall and all over the mirror. - The bathroom was covered in mould and mildew. - The floor was covered in staines, dirt and fluff. It had clearly not been hoovered. - The headboard was covered in hand marks and dirt so it had clearly not been wiped down. - The kettle had water in it and was filled with limescale (God knows how long that had been in there for!) - The room and light fixture was covered in cobwebs and when we showed the manager his excuse was "Well it's hard to reach up there to get them" to which we responded with "A hoover or duster would do the trick!!" - The seats in the rooms were tatty, stained and the fabric was falling off under the chair - The curtains were hanging off and there was a massive spotlight outside our room so everyone could see through from across the road! - The bedding was dirty - Nowhere to put clothes but a small rail and a shelf half hanging off the wall as well as being completely lob-sided! We raised a compliant as soon as we noticed all these things and the man on reception was extremely unhelpful. He went to check for a free room after giving us his excuses and we ended up going from a double room to a twin room! This was still dirty, unpleasant and a complete dust trap! We were offered no money back and didn't even get an apology. We experienced nothing but attitude from him. If the hotel bothers to read this, please know we stayed in Room 1 if you wish to actually correct all of these issues!

Our booking was made by a friend who paid so we could not refuse. Having read the reviews I was prepared to give the hotel a chance to prove otherwise given the amount of negative comments on trip advisor. Unfortunately the hotel was very disappointing in respect of the accommodation. On arrival we were greated by a lovely friendly receptionist, he was a great help and provided good information. We were in a roon on the first floor, a superior room. If this was superior I'd hate to think what a standard room was like. The room was very outdated, in very poor condition. The bed had stains on the mattress (the bedding was crisp and clean). The carpet had stains, the kettle was dirty. The shower had mould and a lot of grouting missing from the tiling both in the shower and flooring. The toilet cistern flusher was broken and dirty. The bathroom blind was really grubby. Didnt sleep very well and decided not to stay for breakfast. Could be much better but clearly needs a huge renovation project undertaken to come anywhere near being a three star hotel.

The only positive about this hotel was the location. It was very run down. Paintwork and carpets stained. It served a purpose for one nights stay (despite uncomfortable beds) and we were very much looking forward to our breakfast in the morning..... unfortunately the breakfast was pretty terrible. I didn't think it was possible to get grey hash browns. In this hotel it is. Spend a little more money (defo not worth what we paid) for a more pleasant experience in a different hotel.

Checked into this hotel for one night whilst attending a function in town. At £69 for a B&B rate it was never going to be the Ritz, but whilst it wasn't bad enough to score a "Terrible" rating, the hotel was not at all good. Enter onto the 3rd floor where my room was only to be greeted by stains on the carpet, heavy bedrooms doors which slammed shut constantly and poor directions. On Entrance to my room. I found the a number of lights didn't work, the shower wasn't so much as a shower but more of a drizzle, that leaked onto the bathroom floor, the were serious dimishes in the decorative state of the room and most importantly the bed was like lying on a cardboard box and whilst I can sleep most places, this really was inexcusable Honestly, if you can, spend a bit more money and stay at one of the nicer hotels like the Spa or the Hotel Du Vin.
