I travelled down from Surrey for a wedding at stopped here for some lunch, The Staff are fabulous, lovely, and very friendly and the atmosphere was brilliant. The Sir John Falstaff was established in the 17th century; the earliest date attributed to the public house is 1670. Sir John Falstaff is a fictional Shakespeare character which is apt given the most famous patron was Charles Dickens, who died in his house across the road at Gads Hill Place. The pub is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ “Uncommercial Traveller” where he writes “a little hostelry which no man possessed of a penny was ever known to pass..” This is a 19th century description that is a reality in the 21st century
