Staff was lovely, just the food wasn't that

A brilliant New Year at the royal pier - such lovely staff made it so good and it was a relaxed and fun weekend. It seems to get better each year the hotel itself could be described as a little bit tired but such value for money. The staff and entertainment made up for this 100% and worth every penny. So lovely to see a team of people enjoy their work, work together and provide good entertainment - quizzes, raffles, fancy dress etcThe food was very good, indeed, better than in places where we have paid a lot more money. The roast dinners were exceptionally lovely. The restaurant manager was calm and composed and ready to help as much as possible. More importantly she made you feel welcome (even on new year?s morning)A lovely weekend. Thank youMary peverall SouthamptonRooms: Although clean rooms which is most important. Shame about some details. Plastic spoons and no shelf in small showerWalkability: So good for walking flat and pictureous with longer island walks availableFood & drinks: Chef is very good at his job. and dinners were greatNoteworthy details: Great entertainment especially Chelsea RoseNot so impressed with his YZ1 but did not spoil a good New Year?s Eve

When we arrived at this hotel we were given a very small room that looked out to nothing but brick walls. We asked for a different room but were told there was nothing available, which we accepted. Within a couple of hours the manager found us sitting outside the hotel and offered us an upgrade which was perfect. All through the weekend of our holiday we found the staff very helpful and friendly. The bar was well stocked, and the restaurant food was very nice. Our group had a themed evening in the bar which the hotel staff happily supported. We had a really good weekend.

Room 23 to be avoided as the shower was discusting. So much mould on the tiles and wallpaper peeling from above the skirting board. I complained to the house keeping staff but nothing was done. I also complained st reception. I was offered another room at the top floor of the hotel but that wasn't much better. Even the wallpaper on stairways was peeling off the walls. Food was below standard and dining times so ridgid that it was impossible to relax.

The hotel is right by the sea front and we had a lovely view of the beach in our room. The hotel staff were super friendly and helpful and our room was one that had been upgraded in stylish black, grey and white. The rest of the hotel is very, very tired with really dated and scuffed wallpaper and carpets that must be at least 30 years old but in a way that?s part of the charm. It is very old fashioned. Our room was large with tea and coffee facilities, a hair drier, TV but no toiletries. Wi fi didn?t work and even my own data and phone signal was patchy. (not the hotels fault). Water pressure in the shower was weak and the springs in the mattress were uncomfortable. We were there for a week and the room wasn?t cleaned - just the bin emptied and some surfaces ( not all) wiped. Being on a beach with sand meant it needed a vacuum and the sheets changing mid week. The hotel seems to cater for large and happy coach parties for the elderly. Despite my criticisms, I really like the place, it?s quirks and the atmosphere.

Just got back from a week's coaching holiday with my mum. We went with Grand UK Tours. Went with an open mind after looking at some of the reviews but can honestly say we had the best time. Yes a little tired in places but couldn't fault the hotel as a whole. Our room was beautiful, no 25. Sea view and huge. Food was fab, the lovely Emma was a delight. Entertainment was good. Staff were lovely. My mum has booked for next year already. Thank you Royal Pier for a wonderful stay

Just come back from a 4 night stay when attending the Scooter Rally. Good sized room with a sea view and balcony ( did pay extra) . Bathroom decent size but could do with a shelf or something to put toothbrush etc on. Room was clean but tired in places and the beds could certainly do with replacing as we could feel the springs. Hoping this is done by next year as we have booked again!Staff were exceptional especially as the hotel was fully booked ,mostly with scooterists.Yes the hotel is tired and can certainly do with a up lift but for location and hard working , friendly staff it's brilliantRemember that you can't pay 2* prices and expect a 5* hotel.Rooms: as aboveNearby activities: didn't use anySafety: Didn't use lift looked slightly antiquatedWalkability: Easy walking distance of the beach and townFood & drinks: didn't eat mealsNoteworthy details: hard working , friendly staff

Were due to stay 2 nights, got our money back after 1. Ripped wallpaper, thinest mattress ever so couldn't sleep, curtains so thin, letting all light in, couldn't sleep and wasn't told we were above the kitchen and the extractor fan going from 7am, making the room hotter than it was. Loud Creaky floorboards too, so not worth £10 a night, let alone £100. All staff ok apart from the manager Sarah, who's customer service was non existent

We stayed Fri to Mon as part of a coach trip, room clean & tidy, lovely food & very helpful staff. Second visit & will definitely return again next year. I honestly don?t understand the poor reviews. People must expect 5* treatment for 2* prices. Don?t let them put you off, go & enjoy

We had a lovely experience at The Royal. Our room was amazing, it made our holiday. The most beautiful views and lots of spacious room. I can't say enough about the dining staff. Nothing is too much trouble. They all work really hard and also the food is amazing and plenty of choice. We have loved our time on holiday and want to thank all the staff for just being amazing x
