We knew that there was a new management team and that they had big shoes to fill - we were blown away! Great atmosphere, amazing food and brilliant service. A big shout out to our server (a 16 year old young lady whose customer service skills are already fantastic) - good luck with your GCSE results!
My steak was tender, generous and delicious. My husband had a burger which was chargrilled, meaty and dripping with cheese.
Thank you for a wonderful meal, we will be back!

I write this review having not stayed at the hotel due to a strange cancelation situation. Unfortunately with less than 24 hours before my arrival the hotel sent a message through Booking.com to advise that my booking would need to be cancelled as 'Booking.com had overbooked the hotel'. They didn't carry out the cancellation, I had to do this through Booking.com and as I was outside of the cancellation window I had to 'request' the cancelation. It took approx. 24 hours for this to be approved by the hotel and for the funds to be processed for a refund. In the meantime I was actually on the Island without anywhere to stay for the following two nights so had to scramble to book alternative accommodation, and as this was so last minute of course it was more expensive. What was disgusting about this situation was that there was no apology or sincerity from The Wheatsheaf Hotel, it was all very matter of fact and after the initial message informing me of the need to cancel there was no further contact whatsoever. I tried to contact via telephone however the line was not connected and eventually found a mobile number. Again on the phone there was no apology or offer to help just an employee telling me that they would ask the landlord to look at the cancellation to release the funds back to me but it was all very blasé. All in all I would recommend anyone contemplating this hotel to book with caution. It's my belief that they had taken too many bookings and were cancelling Booking.com bookings as of course there's a commission to pay to when booking through 3rd parties. It's very strange that I had to cancel my own booking rather than them doing it directly. I'll also be referring this situation to Booking.com for investigation as I was left inconvenienced and out of pocket for this situation.

Great bar , friendly staff. Plenty of seating available within an original character old English bar. Your 4 legged friends are welcome to.
Fabulous food, really do not come here if you are on a diet. Home cooking at 5 star level and something that will tempt everyone.
We will definitely be back.

This was our third visit for the IOW Festival, and sad to say our last..In the morning my wife went to make us coffee
The kettle was rank black sludge in the bottem and after rinsing was still filthy..On leaving after skipping breakfast we spoke to another couple who after there first visit said never again.Standards have slipped.
I never write a bad review but if only for there benefit hope this is read.
Needless to say have booked elsewhere for next year..so sad.

Had a one night stay here and it was exactly what I was looking for! A lovely historic building but with clean & modern rooms. Room had everything i needed & more. Staff were really pleasant and helpful and breakfast was really tasty. Single Room was very private and felt really safe & comfortable there (important as I was staying on my own). A massive thankyou to all the staff who were really welcoming and helpful. Would definitely stay here again and will happily recommend.

Clean comfortable room with AC not a common feature. Mind the showers they are a bit small.
Waking up to breakfast served in the upstairs room was delightful. Really good price as breakfast was included in the booking.

Four of us had dinner here last night and we were all really impressed. There was a good selection of dishes in the menu and specials board and the meals we had were delicious and fantastic value. The venue is full of history and the staff are lovely. Highly recommended. We will be back soon!

Lovely hotel in an excellent location. The building is a few hundred years old, so floors are wonky and the stairs are tight. The rooms are in need of a little TLC, but are clean and comfortable. My biggest complaint is that the shower is tiny and difficult to use, especially if you are a larger person. The staff are lovely and extremely helpful. Breakfast was very nice, especially the sausages.

It was okay. A very meh experience. Floors were uneven, a trip hazard, doors very squeaky, top floor room we stayed in was very hot and the ?free WiFi? they claim didn?t reach our room so no wifi for us :( the bed itself was okay, pillows were flat. The shower took 10 minutes of running it to turn hot and was very weak in power.
Not inherently the hotels fault but being above a pub means some of the others staying there were staying up very late drinking etc. the room next to us had the Tv on till 3am, shouting/chatting, going in and out the room to smoke outside, which made for a sleepless night for our last night. And besides all that the seagulls were up all night screaming too. Definitely wouldn?t stay here again but the breakfast was banging.

In the middle of a one way system, which seems to encompass most of Newport. Great little boozer which I would be happy to have as my local with local ales and well known lagers. The food was really good and such good value for money. The hotel side of it reminds me of The Boot from Charles Dickens novel Barnaby Rudge, uneven floors, narrow stairways, but that?s where the similarities stop. Small room, which was allegedly a double room, mould in the shower cubicle, which was tiny. The shower itself took ages to get warm and had no pressure at all.
All in all, I would eat there again, but not stay
