Stayed in room 25 I?m a bit confused by other reviews it?s possible this one?s recently been refurbished but it was extremely comfortable, clean and warm quite the opposite to some other reports. Beds were comfy and modern, nice good sized modern TV and bathroom in good condition.Staff were super friendly and helpful, great location for Newport and truly amazing value.Only small issue is it?s advertised as having a luggage room which it doesn?t but you can pay £5 per bag per day to store a bag at the nearby premier inn worst case.

Mid January and no real heat.Hotel did provide electric space heater, but it wasn't enough to get the room above 15 degrees C.Also, nice bathtub...no shower.TV did not work.Stay away from here.

Only gets two stars because the staff are lovely and the location is good. The rooms are awful.

I stayed for five nights and I found my room nice and cosy, a nice place to come back to after being out all day. Yes, it?s oldie worldy but that?s part of the charm, it?s got a history about it. The staff were wonderful I enjoyed chatting with them on my way in and out and they were always very friendly and helpful. Sometimes a little noise from outside at night but to be expected being right on the town centre. Towns do tend to have a nightlife as well. I loved the old style bathroom, it was nice to stretch out in a lovely long bath. Who cares about not having a fitted shower, at least you could wash your hair with the shower that was there. I will definitely stay there again and I highly recommend it to all those that have better things to do than worry about not having a shower fitted to a wall.

The staff here are lovely, but the hotel... faded glory is being extremely kind. My single room was tiny, tatty, the window was extremely dirty, the bathroom window was totally clear and looked out onto the street - privacy was compromised. Neither window would open and the room was hot and airless. There was no shower (looks like it had been removed a long time ago), the bath had black bits in it. The tiles had seen much better days in the last century. One tap on the sink has lost it's top. The flat screen TV is tiny. There was an electric extension strip across the floor with wires trailing. Not very safe. I had a shock when I was awoken by the sound of crashing bottles at 5AM, when the empties were collected. The location in the centre of Newport is good, but this really needs some money investing in it. I realise this would raise prices, but I'd rather pay more for a decent room. I left early because I couldn't stand it any longer and went elsewhere. I received an updated invoice that first refunded my unused nights, then added a cancellation charge exactly equal to the refund. I won't ever stop here again.

My partner come here with his mate and the staff was so rude, the rooms was absolutely horrible. On arrival they tried saying that I didn?t have enough funds in my account to pay for the room and it has been declined when I got through to booking.com they said they have give me false information because it has all gone through successfully. My partner goes to the room and the room was full of flies, mould, dirty bedding with blood on it and bogies on the wall, when he went to tell the front manager on desk they said there was no rooms left but when he was leaving the next day and told the young man at reception he said there was loads of rooms left. Tried ringing up to get some sort of an apology or refund but they completely blanked me

Don?t be taken in by the price, this is seriously the worst hotel I?ve ever stayed in- and I?ve stayed in a few shockers. Not really sure where to begin. The one redeemable point is that the staff are pleasant. I stayed in room 8. I think I got about 3 hours sleep across two nights of staying. There are water pipes in the walls so any time anyone on a higher floor runs a tap, it makes a ridiculous amount of noise in the room. This obviously happens through the night. There is also a massive water stain on the ceiling above the bed where there has clearly been a leak in the past. Any time someone walks about in the hotel at night the noise of creaky floorboards reverberates around the room and wakens you up. The gaps under the room doors are big so the hallway light shines through and the curtains are hanging almost off the windows so even if you close them light from the alleyway down the side of the hotel shines into the room. The bathroom is the worst part, and this was not limited to room 8, several of my colleagues were staying at the same time and we were all shocked by it. Firstly it?s carpeted, which in a bathroom, especially one that?s going to be used by lots of people and will need to be cleaned regularly, is insane. The carpet in room 26 bathroom stank of urine and the toilet wasn?t fixed to the floor properly. The bathroom towels smell of damp and are old and need replaced. The rooms don?t have showers- well- some had shower heads but no mount, some had shower mounts but no shower head, some had neither so I guess it?s a ?lucky? dip. All rooms have grubby looking baths. But it takes so long to get hot water out of the taps (which the hotel do acknowledge because of the building?s age) so filling the bath takes forever. Oddly they still give you shower gel? The light above the bathroom sink in room 8 doesn?t work, nor in 26 or 32. A shelf and a hook would be useful in the bathroom, but if I?m honest it?s not where the improvements should begin. The door to room 26 gets blocked every time the stair way door is open. This feels very dangerous, and if there were ever a fire could block the person in the room while people are evacuating. The furniture in the rooms is tatty. The decor is old and marked. The carpet has seen many better days. To be honest, the best part of the stay was checking out. If I had to stay again, I?d probably just pay the £2 for overnight parking and sleep in my car- even if the parking says it?ll run out at 4.30am I?d still probably get more sleep than I did in this hotel.

The whole place needs a drastic makeover. The bedroom was too small with only 2 twin electric power sockets. Only 1 bedside lamp . The bathroom floor was carpeted which is not very hygienic. No shower just an oldish bath. The staff were fine and the bar and dining areas were never used.

We visited the Isle over the August Bank holiday 2023 and like many others we came for the 'step back in time' experience. We stayed at the Calvert's Hotel which advertised as a budget friendly hotel ideally located in the centre of Newport which it is. The website states 'All bedrooms are well equipped with a digital TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, a super comfortable divan bed and an en-suite bathroom' on the face of it an ideal location. On arrival we found the entrance, corridors and rooms are all clean and well furnished. The staff are very attentive and informative, so what could go wrong? Once in our room we unpacked and got ready to go out for the evening. It was only then we realised that the shower wasn't fixed to the wall just a mixer tap. My wife wanted to wash her hair so I went to the reception and enquired if the shower could be fixed to the wall. I even offered 'if you give me a nail and a piece of string I can make do'. We were told that Showers were an optional extra so I offered to pay for that option. 'No none of the rooms have showers' came the reply. 'They are advertised as En-suite without shower facilities'. Ok I like nostalgia like most people but there are some things I am glad to have see the back of, carpets in the bathroom and rubbish shower facilities to name two. We paid £88.00 per night and for that I would expect a functioning shower and a few quirks getting the temperature right it is all part of hotel fun. But, (and I really hate having a go at family run business's) the Calvert's hotel believe it is perfectly fine to offer a jug as a shower facility. I waited to contact them when we returned home as I wasn't going to berate the staff who were doing their best. When I contacted the Reservations team they saw no problem with the facilities and defended them very robustly. So I guess writing this review is my way of letting others know not to make the same mistake as we did.? If you like a jug shower them this is the place for you.? But if like me you like functioning shower DON'T STAY HERE.One further note;? I finally located the Fire Action Notice I thought should be mounted on the hotel room door. The notice in our room was mounted above the mirror on the opposite side of the room about 6 feet up the wall. Not the most visible place and no mention of what route you should use for your escape.

Very spacious twin room. Very clean. Decor in the room looked new. More places to hang things in bathroom would be useful. Lots of space to sit on ground floor. Parking is on the street. Breakfast is available but we did not sample it this time as we needed to move the car by 8am so we decided to go onto our next destination. Really liked the staff - very friendly and helpful. Deserves more visitors. Would be good if they plumbed in their smartlooking coffee machine, too.

Dont waste your money. Entering the room the first thing i noticed was the mirror wasnt straight so walked over to straighten it but it was fixed to the wall! Hand basin not big enough for the taps, toilet not fixed to the floor and shower curtain and fixings for a shower but no shower ( even little bottles of shower gel left for us!). My husband went to ask where it was to be told if it breaks we dont fix it. When we tried to run a bath ( which looked like it needed a good clean) it took 40 mins to get two inches of water. Reading the info they leave in the room it says you cant have takeaway food in the room and when we opened the window the gutter outside was full of takeaway boxes !

If you are a fan of what hotels were like in the 1970s or in the Soviet Union then this will delight you as this is like some kind of austerity theme park hotel with the smell of bitter damp masonry, period wood chip wallpaper and a bath that hasn't been changed since shillings were in circulation. You can't check in until 4pm and check out is 10.30am ... and a woman shouts at you that she is doing the accounts when you say that the heating is broken. This kind of attention to detail is perfect for the retro English hospitality experience.
