My partner and I booked 2 nights with yourselves as we needed to be in the area for my grandmother's funeral. As we had a long drive up after work on 13/02/24, we knew we would be arriving late in the evening. My partner phoned to speak with the receptionist in advance to check what time we would be able to check in; she was told that reception would be open until 22:00, but if we were to arrive later then our room key could be left in envelope for us to collect on arrival. We agreed we would call on our way up to confirm our arrival time once we knew the traffic situation. On our way up I tried to call at 20:55, the call was picked up but nobody spoke so I hung up. I called again at 21:05 and got an automated message to say that reception was closed. As, at this point, we knew we would arrive before 22:00 so hoped that wasn't an issue. On arrival at 21:40, we found to our suprise that the hotel's front door was locked. There was a night bell which we pressed a few times but with no response. There was also a phone, which was out of order but advised we called the hotel's main number and pressed 0 to speak to the out of hours on call member of staff. I called, with no answer, and left a message. Further calls were then also not answered, leaving us still stuck outside the hotel.Luckily for us, some other guests turned up at this point. We explained the situation and that there would hopefully be an envelope with our name on and our room key. The other guests found that and kindly agreed to let us in.The key that the other guests had found and handed to us was for room 11, so that is where we went. As it turned out that was not our room, thankfully as it was disgusting in there. We were finally able to speak with someone on the phone who told us our room number was on a piece of paper in the envelope and the key was in the room itself. We were told that room 11 was being used by the person on call overnight.Had it not been for the other guests, I shudder to think how long we would have had to wait outside before someone came to the door or took our calls. After a full day or work and a 5 hour drive, the night before a family funeral, this was very distressing. Also, having inadvertently seen the room used by the on call overnight (photo/video attached), I was shocked to see the empty bottle of vodka and several empty beer glasses in the room of the person presumably responsible for guests' safety in an emergency.Other than that it was a very basic hotel, as you would expect for the low price range. The reception wasn't manned during the day either, so you had to call the office if you wanted to speak to someone.Management offered us a future night free to compensate for our experience, but we have no desire to revisit.

The staff at this hotel were great and couldn't do enough for you. What let it down was the run down rooms. The door locks were very temperamental and we're very difficult to unlock and lock. On various occasions the door was mistakenly left unlocked because it couldn't be locked with a key.Inside the room wasn't much better. The hairdryer was tethered to the wall but not plugged in so it was pointless being there. The bathroom was okay apart from the faulty toilet, it just wouldn't flush! The only way we could get it to flush was repeatedly pressing the flush and sometimes it would work, most of the time it didn't.The furniture was also falling apart and it wasn't the cleanest of rooms either. The bed was the worst part as it was super uncomfortable, feels like it needs replacing. We also discovered cigarette burns in the duvet. The breakfast was nice and the staff serving it were very helpful and polite.Overall it was a good stay thanks to the efforts of the staff but let down by the need to invest in the rooms.Rooms: Investment and modernisation desperately neededFood & drinks: Very good

This review covers an evening Christmas meal and the B&B. Overall rating (that's both elements) = 2*.Christmas Dinner gets -1* to 0* because: vegetable soup, tasty; bread roll, stale; turkey, looked like pressed turkey roll & tasted of chlorine; sprouts & carrots, soggy; roast potatoes, at least one hour past their best; for pig in blanket read shoe leather in a crystal of table salt and finally the stuffing ball, it would have lasted one maybe two holes on a golf course. Pudding OK. I was grossly over charged but out of politeness and in deference to the organisers not British to make a fuss at the time. It was enjoyable purely for the company who were a great bunch.I recall a similar experience many years ago and after complaining later was eventually offered a refund, which I asked them to donate to one of my charities.B&B this is where the Birch gets some stars.Nice room, looking tired but not when you are asleep. Plenty of lights including ceiling lights which is good and not seen in many travel lodge type accommodation. Likewise with the 3 pin standard electricity plugs. Plenty of them and plenty of USB plugs. The room was warm, quite and the bed very comfortable. The TV was OK. Coffee & tea making as standard and a small but adequate bathroom with shower. More than adequate for this class of accommodation.Breakfast. Sausage OK, fried or was it poached egg OK. Must have had some of the shoe leather bacon left over from the previous evening; my shoes still didn't need re-soleing. Youghurt, a quality brand and orange juice OK. Toast, cerials, milk, tea & coffee available. The best asset this hotel has was it's staff, pleasant and well turned out. (Could have done with some help with my bag as I am clearly disabled, but none on offer.)Overall, yes book in for a night if it's uninspiring location near the north Manchester motorway ring suits your rest-stop on a long distance trip (about £55 to £65 single per night) but eat somewhere else or get a takeaway. Plenty of parking space but bring your own extra lights to avoid bumping into things.Rooms: Helpful receptionist.Comfy, plenty of 3 pin + USB sockets. Warm, quiet, comfortable bed, adequate small shower room & toilet, working TV. Tea and coffee (long life low quality packages). Overhead lighting (which helps when putting your stuff away). Beginning to look a bit tired (not noticeable when asleep).Nice woman who does the servicing.Walkability: Only one well hidden disabled parking space with a broken old style orange (not blue) wheel chair sign. No ramps for wheelchairs only steps at the entrance.Food & drinks: Soup OK. Turkey roll tastes of chlorine. Sprouts and carrots soggy. Roast potatoes overdone (check with your dentist before attempting). Stuffing ball would be good for a hole or two on the golf course. Pudding OK.Nice serving staff.Noteworthy details: Positioned close to J19 M62 so suitable only for an overnight stay when breaking a long journey.

Stayed while travelling for business, location, and price were good.Common areas such as reception and the restaurant were nicely decorated, and the staff were friendly and attentive.Sadly, the rooms were a far cry from the modern and well finished reception area. Rooms were dated, and poory finished. The bathroom door on my room was sorely in need of replacement with the top hinge having 2 of 3 screws hastily fixed with rawl plugs and the door not sitting right, meaning it needed lifting to close. The chair provided would not pull out sufficiently from the desk due to how wide the legs were, meaning any work done at the desk had to be done at an awkward angle. The mattress was uncomfortable, leading to a poor night's sleep. Also, the WiFi signal was poor, only getting decent reception near the door of the room with virtually no signal further into the room. The TV provided was a very old model, which took a long time to switch on.

Rooms are awful and dated. Shower didn't work and filthy floors and very old furniture. Staff surly and overwhelmed with complaints. Breakfast cold and undercooked. Max worth 20 per night. Don't go here!

You drive up and it looks like any hotel, a nice big car park. The entrance, reception, dining room and bar are lovely, very modern and you can see money has been put into it.The staff were super pleasant. The room however, the smell, the heat and the fact I found a crisp wrapper and white plastic bag just sticking out of the bed summed it up.The room on first look was ok, modern but when you looked closer the carpet was stained, the bathroom was unclean and the filter missing from the shower.I paid £49.50 for bed and breakfast, a good price. If however the room was a little better I?d have said it was a great price. There isn?t much that needed doing.I forgot to mention the breakfast was lovely.

Three stars only for the kindness of the staff and the fairly decent breakfast. As for the room, it was a nightmare after a gigantic spider appeared from under the bed.
