I tried to pre-order a book from Bolton to pick up in Preston, was told by the woman in the shop that can't be done.
I don't know if she just couldn't be bothered or if that's Waterstones company policy, but it wasn't very helpful.

This shop is fast becoming my favourite (&only place) to visit in the town centre.
The staff are very knowledgeable & friendly.
I love the cafè which is on the first floor where you can get a coffee and sit whilst reading your newly purchased book ( or bring your own). They also have 2/3 small leather settees in the shop area where customers can sit to read quietly.

I liked this Waterstones and collection of books in it. My favorite part was that they had a romantic fiction section that is rare, and a good collection of manga. A nice cafe on the first floor with lovely staff.

I was going to hold back, but it's happened again today and not just from one behind the desk. Not impressed. Been buying books for years, a smile and some acknowledgement or conversation, rather than the staff trying to get away with as little interaction as possible might be nice. Avoiding eye contact or ignoring something you say is just plain rude. If you don't like people - don't work in customer service. You have to really like books to shop here. I've worked in retail and seeing people happy cuts both ways. Service like this however drives people online. I always leave feeling like an imposition. Sue bless her, is brilliant however. I don't like sticking the boot in on high street retail but everyone in life has their burdens, you just don't see beyond the face we show the world. I'll be buying books elsewhere from now on, pity as the coffee shop and its service is nice. Today was the final straw, I've given this place enough chances over the years.

I called into this store last Saturday looking for book ideas for my Son who has Aspergers with very niche interests for books. I was totally out of my depth when a young lady approached me asking if I needed any help. I explained I was looking for books for Christmas and that my Son had very strong political views. The young lady did a bit of research for me and suggested The Origins of Totalitarianism. I specifically asked for her name as she was was such a polite and enthusiastic young lady. "Abbey" is an asset to Waterstones and an absolute pleasure to speak with. Will definitely be calling again soon.
