Ye Old Cheshire Cheese should be a top pub stop for anyone who?s interested in English literary history. At least two very famous English authors frequented this pub. One Samuel Johnson in the 1700s and one Charles Dickens in the 1800s. And apparently many more to include an American visitor-Mark Twain. When you come in, you will see signage in the dining room indicating where Johnson sat. The drinks were good, thanks that?s one of the platters that we ordered was delicious. But the best part was meeting several locals and travelers and making new friends. This pub is like getting a free museum visit and tour in addition to the fine food and drink. And if you don?t like the area on the first level, there are three other bars and unique places that you can lose yourself in a fine piece of English history.

Feels like being plunged back into 17th century enjoying a beer with writers or painters. Food is very nice, and service is kind.
A must of you want to have a test of old London.

Bartender Rob, terrible service, we spent £800~ in.the course of a night and each round was met with destain from the barman as if we were doing him a huge inconvenience. At one point, we placed a large order and two barman, instead of working on our order, were watching boxing videos on youtube.

Bartender called Rob on the first floor bar on 21/08/25 was incredibly unprofessional to my sister and rude to me who was ordering and self delivering drink to my table of 13. As a whole the bar was nice as wells as SOME of the staff.

A divine pub experience that welcomed Londoners since around 1530, including literary giants such as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Arthur Conan Doyle.
An unforgettable ambience and interior, feels like Victorian England. A must-visit for pub-crawlers or British history lovers.

Beautiful historic pub with lots of various seating areas. Very popular with tourists. We turned up about 10 minutes after opening on a Saturday and it was already getting pretty busy. Knocked one star off for the stench from the toilets. Really strong smell of urine that can be smelled throughout a large part of the pub. The other star off for the barman that served us. He was miserable as sin and clearly didn't want to be there.

Worth a visit for the history of the building. The beer is good if a like all London pubs a little pricey.

Disappointing. Food expensive and very average. Service adequate. Nothing special. I had steak pudding. Not much meat in the pie. £19.50 ish, then £5.50 for potatoes and another £5.50 if you want a vegetable. History but the pub is not nearly as quaint as I'd hoped

Great atmosphere in a historic, dark building. Perfect to give a quick impression of ye olde pubs for someone visiting. However, the food is really weak. I had fish and chips where the fish was limp and translucent, which I think tends to happen with frozen or old cod?always a downer. The chips were OK. Just get a half of real ale and wander around for a bit would be my advice.

Seriously? The oldest pub in London! How can you NOT visit this place. Make sure to go all the way down to the basement. Each level is another couple centuries of history. Staff is awesome.
