The Moorgate pool is a health and safety hazard (head injury risk) because it doesn't have backstroke flags. Has clearly not been designed by anyone with a background in or knowledge of the sport of swimming. Despite numerous requests and reminders to head office and to the club, the Virgin management approach seems to be to simply wait until someone swims head first into the wall. Virgin: please familiarise yourself with standard lane swimming setup requirements and guidance (eg as per Swim England) and adhere to them. It is disappointing that despite cosmetic upgrades to the club, basic safety requirements are not in place.

This used to be so much better. Music is appalling and way too loud. They?ve replaced all the lighting with migrainous harsh blue white light which is no good for anybody. Spa area is gross. No more robes. Cost cutting everywhere but they don?t relaid that it puts off renewing so they?re shooting themselves in the foot. Staff can?t care less. I could go on.

Love the club!

Why are we being charged for wristbands for entry/lockers when we are forced to use your facilities as ours have been closed all month (and we are directed to you??)
August 2025 by Jenn
The extra fee for a wrist band feels very on-brand for a virgin gym. But the lovely guys at front desk (Spencer and gem?) were good humoured so I only feel half as ripped off. 10/5 for customer service, 0/10 virgi mgmt

I joined Virgin Active Moorgate a week ago and I?m already very happy with my experience. The space is bright and well laid out, the gym is always clean, and the equipment is top quality. The atmosphere is welcoming and professional, with staff who are both friendly and knowledgeable. A special shout-out to Gem, who has been fantastic!

Virgin active cutting corners wherever they can and raising costs..now no robes and charge multi-gym members £7.50 for a locker wristband when we use your other branded locks at other gyms, with no alternative. Really cheeky, why can?t you take member card and return it at the end of a visit when returning the spare band? There should be consistency across your gyms if you are going to offer multigym access memberships!

Spencer on reception at the Moorgate branch is truly the backbone of this gym.
I deleted a 1-star review I left three months ago, just so I could acknowledge how great he is and the value he brings to the gym. Spencer is honest and treats everyone with the respect they deserve.
While I?m not pleased with the gym overall and have serious issues with management, I cannot fault the staff at Moorgate, especially Spencer.
Thank you Spencer!

A few weeks back I had an EXCELLENT PT session with Aysha Novsarka at the Moorgate Virgin active.
She didn't patronise me and gave me some truly wonderful tips on how to use the equipment. She introduced me to a bang on technique for the RDL (Romanian Dead lift) if you read this Aysha - ive been practicing hard!
She had a no nonsense approach to her training session, but clearly cared about me getting it right. Shes a natural!
Then at the end if the sesh she gave me one of the best stretches of my life with a little push of the leg lol.
She checked in with me before the session and was happy to reschedule when I couldn't make the first. Her communication was on point. (Something I value highly)
The Moorgate gym is a great place place to be with you in it. Keep up the good work. Trainers like you keep us coming!

I have a PT -Josh - at the gym. Brilliant. Sorts my technique, gives me lots of motivation and throws nutritional advice in as a freebie. Recommend it.

I?ve always been into classes, Virgin Active are good for this. For some variation I wanted to start personal training, but struggled for a while to find consistency with a personal trainer, very nearly gave up trying (an area VA need to be better at). Now having worked with a trainer Aysha for a couple of months, I?m absolutely loving it. She super knowledgable, and teaching me lots! I really enjoy learning from her.

Since writing my first review I have heard back from Virgin head office saying that they appreciate my feedback with regard to people not showering before entering the pool as outlined in their rule book. They said they would look into it and offered no real resolution to my query. From what I understand is that I signed a contract for one year and am obliged to pay a certain amount every month to attend the club. Virgin's obligation is to offer a service with guide lines and rules which are clearly outlined in their rule book. One of the rules being that everyone entering the spa/pool area must shower beforehand. It is very clear, yet none of the pool staff enforce this rule. Over 50% of people who come into the pool do not shower beforehand and bring into the pool all their body products (anti-perspirant, cologne, body oil, hair products, etc.) This tastes and smells vile when it floats in the water.
I pay my monthly fee and Virgin is not fulfilling their obligations. This, from what I understand, is not right. I will now approach the Environmental Health Office at the Islington Council and see what they have to say.

Every year membership fees go up, but there is an inverse correlation as the level of services is going down. Fair enough, Virgin Active is financially struggling and had to restructure their debt to stay afloat, however if you want to attract more customers and retain existing ones, just do a simple thing - CARE!! One final thought: they don?t collect 5-star reviews, but surely they are collecting DUST in their lockers?

I do not recommend this gym based on my experience as a paying member (£96 pcm):
- The gym is advertised as ?the best in the area for the price? and claims there are quiet times, but I have never seen it quiet, even during off-peak hours like 3pm on weekends.
- The ?spin studio? is just a room with bikes and lights; it lacks the atmosphere and equipment of a proper spin studio.
- Classes are always fully booked, and when they are running, the available gym space is significantly reduced.
- Cleaning standards are poor. I have observed areas (main entrance stairs, lockers) with heavy dust and showers with flies. - Some areas appear not to have been cleaned for weeks.
- Equipment is unreliable. The newer treadmills frequently malfunction, and often only half are operational.
- Planned building works have no confirmed start date, and the gym has not offered partial refunds or access to other clubs (if you have multiaccess you already have access to 'Angel') as compensation. Previous similar works overran their schedule.
- Front desk staff vary from very helpful to unhelpful, and complaints are not consistently followed up.
If you value your money and expect to be treated well as a customer, I recommend looking elsewhere.

It?s a great gym with great helpful staff, amazing Classes and vibe. Only downside the changing rooms. They need a bit of attention and maintanance.
