There are lots of good things about Toklas Bakery, most of which are pretty obvious. They have a big problem with people who buy a coffee and sit right through the lunch hours on a laptop or phone, meaning there are almost no seats. But my big complaint is the recent adoption of a billing system at the counter that invites me to add a tip. I find prompted tipping extremely obnoxious at the best of times but for counter service it's absurd. I have started avoiding Toklas because I can't stand having to either give a tip for counter service or feel awkward about pressing 0.

I liked it, but it's been so hyped up that maybe I expected more?
Prices were reasonable, flavours were good, pastry was good. Best I've had in London? No, but the two things I tried (cardamon bun, Wensleydale swirl) were good.

I love their restaurant and now love their bakery! I only tried one pastry, their fig danish. The pastry was so buttery, the fig was tasty, you could really taste the quality of the ingredients, it was delicious. I need to come back to try some more and try their coffee too.

Best cafe in London? Has the elusive combo of excellent coffee (Assembly roasters) and outstanding pastries. Not just your classic croissant and pain au chocolat, but warm cinnamon buns, various creative savoury pastries. Has fresh bread to take away and sandwiches for lunch.

If you want a HOT, hot chocolate, don't go here. I could feel that the first one made for me wasn't hot enough by the feel of the glass it was in, which was barely warm and confirmed this on sipping it. I asked for it to be reheated and was met with a disgruntled: "Do you mean you want it extra hot?" I just wanted a proper hot chocolate, not something tepid. The barista said she would make another one but sadly this one was barely warmer so I gave up. It was expensive, a mean "portion" in a small glass (not a cup or mug) so a complete let down. My friend's coffee was hot! Don't get why it's such a problem for people to deliver what they say they offer. Poor attitude, no interest in customer service. Won't be going there again.

Very tasty wild garlic soup. I really recommend it. The coffee is very good and there's a friendly service.
