The Wrestlers ? A Pint of Heritage in Highgate
Nestled just off Highgate High Street, The Wrestlers is a pub that wears its history with quiet pride. With roots tracing back to the 16th century, it?s one of those rare spots where time seems to pause?offering locals and wanderers alike a moment of calm, a well-poured pint, and a sense of belonging.
Atmosphere Traditional without being stuffy, The Wrestlers feels like a living room for the neighborhood. Think low ceilings, timber beams, and a fireplace that crackles in winter. The crowd is a mix of longtime Highgate residents, walkers fresh from Hampstead Heath, and the occasional curious tourist. It?s the kind of place where conversations meander and no one?s in a rush.
Food & Drink The menu is classic British pub fare, done with care:
Sunday roast: generous, comforting, and reliably good
Fish & chips: crisp batter, flaky cod, and proper mushy peas
Ale selection: local brews and national staples, well-kept and rotated
Wine list: modest but thoughtful, with decent reds for roast night
Prices are reasonable for the area, and portions lean hearty.

Bit quiet when I was there but I suspect it is a lively pub later on. Traditional with good service and the nibbles we had were tasty.

The food was average; starters were ok, nothing special. We had Sunday roasts for Father?s Day and the beef was particularly rare and couldn?t cut it with the steak knife provided. The pork and chicken roasts good though. I didn?t want overcooked veg but the broccoli and carrots were only half cooked that we all struggled to cut it. Overall the meal was meh, though they did look good. The sauces for the roast arrived in paper pots like mcds?bizarre.
Service?we had to ask the bar staff where our starters were as we?d waited a while. We decided not to stay for pudding. Credit to the staff, they were friendly and helpful and when they saw so much food left on plates they did ask why and credited us a main course as compensation without prompting.

I've lived in Highgate for 10 years & eaten many roasts in the area, but I have to say that the roast at The Wrestlers far out done any I had eaten previously.
For starters, the service here is top-notch. Friendly, relaxed but professional & chatty. Then the roast itself was worth the money, which, again, was on the cheaper side for the area. Our party had the lamb, chicken ; beef & each eas cooked perfectly with a decent portion of veg, gravy & sauce.
Most pubs in the area ask for £24+ for a roast, whereas here, it's maximum £20 & the quality is way better. I'd return here for the food or just a pint any day of the week.

What is it, 6+ pubs going out of business a week in England? We all know the usual culprits...people have just had enough of ridiculously high prices for both food and drink, miserable bar staff, etc...
Let's take a look at the Wrestlers. For what used to be a buzzing place with real character, it's a shadow of its former self.
I won't be returning....why? Because I don't expect to pay God knows what for two drinks, only to be promptly presented with plastic skiffs just after midnight. No. This isn't a bloody university bar. It's not a festival. It's a local sodding pub. When there are 6 customers in your establishment you just wait for people to finish their drinks. Hell, even if there were more people, who cares? They have paid good money to have a decent drink instead of sitting at home - but no, you spoil yet something else of the pub experience.
I left my drink where it was. Money down the drain. I guess most people just do the English thing and say nothing - and then never return? Ask yourself why most people only come in for last orders.....SHITE like this!
What a shame.....

Went there for lunch today don?t eat red meat and they had no chicken had sold out. Parsnips were like bullets their broccoli was so soft and the cauliflower cheese which was extra was just mush with a bit of cheese stuck on not even done properly. I?ve was recommended it here and was Disappointed with the food. Staff were good And service was good, but I would just go there for a drink again, not the food

I don?t know about the food and I can?t speak for it but in terms of staff, service and crowd this is the best pub in Highgate and I?ve lived here for 27 years.

I really wanted to like it here but it was a real miss. The food took ages, our order was wrong and the overall quality of food was average.
The saving grace is that the staff were friendly and the building is very nice. Maybe this is better for a drink than food.

One of the best traditional British pubs in the area. Food usually solid, but can be a bit variable. Very friendly staff!

Incredibly DISAPPOINTING- over a week prior to our booking I was in contact by email with the so called manager of this appalling place. I made it very clear that we were coming as a birthday treat for our 3 children and I asked (and this was. Confirmed by email) to reserve 2 x chicken and 1 x Vegan.
When we arrived to a dark, miserable and atmosphere less pub we were shocked to be presented with a totally different menu than the one promised and the ONLY miserable offering for our vegan son was a pathetic cauliflower steak - HE DOEANT EAT CAULIFLOWER and this was not what was on the original menu. We had to scurry around to find another place to go to eat - and the manager has not even had the decency to email me to apologise that the food promised wasn?t on the menu even though I made it very clear !! DISGUSTING. DISAPPOINTING. NEVER EVER WILL FO THERE AGAIN - I suggest you choose really well before going to this horrible place
