My 10-Year-Old Son Was Left in Tears at Gail?s Dulwich Village
This morning at Gail?s in Dulwich Village, my 10-year-old son walked in confidently to buy a bacon sandwich, a drink, and a coffee for me while I parked nearby. He?s been to this café many times and felt comfortable going in on his own.
What happened next left him in tears.
Despite queuing up and waiting patiently at the counter, he was completely ignored by a staff member?a woman who served multiple adults who arrived after him, even someone who physically pushed ahead. She didn?t acknowledge him, not even when there were no other customers. He said ?excuse me? several times, and she continued to overlook him. In his own words, ?I felt invisible.?
After over 10 minutes of this, he returned to the car crying?humiliated and hurt. When I went in to ask why he hadn?t been served, the staff offered a flimsy excuse about thinking he was part of a group of children (a group that, by that point, was already seated and eating).
No proper apology. No reflection. Just a patronising ?sorry? and a rude, shouty exchange with me when I asked for our takeaway order to finally be taken. They waived the cost of the coffee?an insulting gesture, as if a free drink could make up for the emotional impact on my son.
This wasn?t just bad service. This was exclusion, pure and simple. Whether it was because of his age or other assumptions they made about him, he was treated as if he didn?t belong. That?s not something I?ll stay silent about.
Children deserve to be treated with respect. They deserve to be seen.
I?m sharing this so other parents are aware, and so Gail?s takes real steps to make sure this doesn?t happen again?to my child or anyone else?s.

Poor service, average food, bad coffee. 5 star prices.
The only positive is it's open 30mins earlier than the independent cafe round the corner.

We noticed they had Potato Rosemary Bread but we were not sure we wanted to buy a whole loaf, so Ava gave us a slice to sample. It was delicious, as was the brownie ? Good food, Great service! Thanks Ava and Gail's!

As a frequent flyer to Dulwich Village the experience is great. The Baristas are excellent and make the most mooreish coffee and always know my coffee. The food is very inviting and I have had to make choices between favourites - so as to keep coming back and still have a waistline ?
The Team are so friendly and always on hand to give advice as to selection and raise your mood
Dulwich Village is by far my favourite Gail?s - and I?ve been to a few

Rude staff.Almost had my order thrown at me! Loud music blaring out. Even sitting outside wasn't a relief from the awful music. Would not recommend.

It?s honestly baffling that in 2025, such a large chain still has such a poor vegan offering?Gail?s has, in fact, the worst selection of any bakery in the area. Every time we?ve popped in over the past few years to ask about vegan options, we?ve been shown a single tiny vegan cake. Extremely disapointing.

Everything i tried was good, the staff is really friendly, sometimes they give me little pastry for free, which is highly appreciated.
The reason for the 2 stars is this..I come to this bakery every week for almost a year now. What puts me off is the toilet. I understand they are busy all, but, given the prices and the prestige of this bakery, it is not acceptable to always have a dirty toilet. Never, but never, I found the bathroom clean. It is always full of water, smelly, dirty, which is not ACCEPTABLE! I'll change my rating once I see that toilet cleaned. I am surprised how come this is not mentioned more often in the reviews..

I use Gail?s a lot but I have one big complaint. I deeply suspect that sandwiches are not fresh. The bread often seems stale and I fear they are prepared at some central warehouse and frozen overnight. I have reason to say this. I. am sure this saves oodles in costs but it damages the brand.

Busy cafe with plenty of baked goods to offer. Had the cheese ham leek quiche. It was delicious. Decent coffee too. Staff were friendly even during busy times

Cold and expensive. They keep the door wide open during the winter. It?s their policy to keep their customers cold.
