“If you love the steamed-up windows of a traditional chippy on a cold evening, and a paper wrapper brimming with tasty chips, Cod upon Thames is for you. The staff are friendly and chatty, the fish is good, the chips are even better (or should that been even batter?), and it’s only the stark décor and brutalist interior that denies this little local treasure the full star rating. Maybe it's the oil, or the way they cut them, but the chips are plump and flavoursome. Burnished metal walls make it feel like you’re in a shipping container, and the counter is so high it’s only possible to glimpse the staff. But let’s focus on the food. It’s the usual mixture of bangers (some in batter), chicken, burgers and fish ‘n’ chips. Standard fish and chips is under seven quid, pies are £2.40, and you can get chip butties (£1.60), cheesy chips for £3 and standard chips – a good-sized portion – for £1.80. Extras include onion rings, mushy peas and baked beans, and Cod upon Thames also does pineapple fritters and curry sauce. Soft drinks are housed in a large fridge at the far end.”

“Has a decent enough selection of groceries & household items & they're open 7am-11pm every day, so it's a very convenient shop to have near home. The staff are helpful & friendly, plus the store is always very clean too.The 'downers' are that when shopping using your SmartShop at this Penrhyn Road branch makes app, you HAVE TO pay via Google/ Apple Pay immediately upon finishing your shop, so you can't pay at the self-serve or till. So, if you want to pay cash/ have a card that doesn't connect to GooglePay (eg: Hyperjar or Barclays until very recently!) it means you can't take advantage of Nectar Prices that you can ONLY get by using SmartShop which sucks - so definitely worth knowing in advance! Then of course, Sainsbury's annoyingly mark-up the price by about 10-20p for most items, which really frustrates me as this seems such an archaic 'levy' for these smaller, 'early til late' branches from years back when most shops closed by 7pm, so sort it out Sainsbury's cos you don't charge extra in your large stores that open til 10pm!”

“05.01.22 - very helpful and friendly staff. I took in a parcel to go UPS, I’d made a mistake with the invoice attachments, rather than just accept it anyway, they pointed out my error and explained what I needed to do.Very helpful guys running the place.”

“NHS staff are rightly being celebrated right now, but not far behind them have to be the shops helping local communities get through this corona chaos. Big hat-tip to the team at Hawks Local for staying open, keeping their prices reasonable and approaching a difficult situation with bravery and a sense of humour! Nice one chaps.”

“I use this place occasion as it has a parcel return service, I have always found the staff to be really helpful and polite, most places I pick up or drop off parcels have really unhelpful and rude staff but I have been served here by several different people and have always had a good experience”

“Great corner shop to have around. The more "formal" / chain-like of the two corner shops on the Triangle. Has a Post Office inside (super handy for depositing packages or paying in money) with lots of packing material at the back, and has a very decent selection of drinks etc. Some rare American imports for reasonable prices too. Min. card spend is £3.”

“Big big thankyou to staff here. I was delivered the wrong Christmas cake via Deliveroo by mistake. I called the store who organised for a Deliveroo driver to return and deliver the right cake. On the night we all discovered Christmas was badly affected by the move to tier 4, this was a smile inducing sweet gesture. Thankyou.”

“Friendly and welcoming guy that served, we had a conversation about the continuous new releases of Monster Energy drinks. They take contactless and believe they don't have a minimum requirement for spending either.”
