Caffè Nero ? Highgate Review
Atmosphere & Service (N/A ? Takeaway Only)
This was a takeaway order with my own cup, and while Nero is usually my go-to for high street coffee, this particular visit fell short.
Coffee Quality (2/5)
? Foam was poor, with big bubbles, a clear sign of improper milk steaming. A well-made flat white should have smooth, velvety microfoam, not airy froth.
? Taste was ashy and almost smoky, likely due to over-roasted or burnt espresso, resulting in a harsh, unbalanced bitterness rather than a well-rounded coffee.
Value for Money (2/5)
Luckily, I had a voucher for a free coffee, saving me £4?otherwise, this would have felt like a waste of money. Even at a high street chain, a flat white should meet basic quality standards. This felt rushed, lacking the care that separates a decent chain coffee from a subpar one.
Room for Improvement
As a location serving a small community, this Nero could benefit from behaving more like a local, high-quality destination rather than just another generic chain outpost. With Highgate?s local charm, there?s potential for it to focus on consistency and attention to detail, rather than just meeting minimum expectations.
Overall
A disappointing experience at a chain I usually trust. This flat white missed the mark on texture, flavour, and execution. Hopefully, just a bad day.

Scruffy and cold venue. Filthy toilet. Only take away cups and paper bags available, for food and drinks that were consumed there. We had a £30 voucher that wouldn't work for some reason, but no offer to help solve it, so we had to pay. Really disappointing but there is very little competition in Highgate village so perhaps this is why it gets away with it. Food and drinks tasted ok.

A very poor service experience. I was glared at for asking for oat milk. For some reason, asking for the filthy table to be cleaned resulted in both staff making faces. If there had been a cloth, I would have cleaned the tray myself - it was covered in the previous user's leftovers - but by this time I was done with being mocked and treated like I didn't deserve to exist! I won't be rushing back.

Poor service and I was frowned at for giving precise instructions how I wanted my drink. If you don't like dealing with customers and only come to work to chat with other employees don't work at Nero. (Ps and I'm not the only customer they have made faces at!)

School kids with food from outside, Starbucks cups, GAIL's Coffee cups! (inside a Caffè Nero!), having not bought anything from the shop just sitting there taking up tables and space while honest paying customers have to look for somewhere to sit is not good. They need to be barred unless they buy something
