I met with some friends for dinner last night. It was a trip down memory lane close to where we had gone to university together several decades ago
It?s a sign of the Gate?s longevity that we used to come here in our university days. Since then, the chain has had quite a journey - expanding into a multi-restaurant outfit at one point before now pulling back to its one original place
Easy to miss if you walk past casually, it shares its entrance from the street with a local church. Walking up the stairs to the first floor restaurant, it?s not changed much with its bright casual dining area
Best of its, its inventive vegetarian food is still super delicious. Their motto is, we don?t make delicious vegetarian food, we make good food. And I think that?s the secret of their success. They don?t take meat dishes and try to substitute something for the meat. They just make a completely original vegetarian dish. I?m one of the world?s definite carnivores but the fact I?ve come to the Gate recurrently over the years speaks for itself
It was great to see my old friends last night, including the Gate

Last visited about 25 years ago and still a great vegetarian place. Disappointed to discover it is now 100% vegan but eggs and cheese wasn't missed. In fact the 'cheese' on my Betroot Burger (sic) was incredible!
Hopefully won't leave it another 25 years before returning!

The Gate Vegetarian Restaurant in Hammersmith used to be a favourite treat, but after this evening we won't be returning.
The service was at best casual: drinks and starters came pretty promptly and the food was tasty, although not to the standard we had experienced there before.
We then sat there for 10-15 minutes with our empty plates waiting to be taken away. Eventually I asked for this to happen, even though the staff had noticed several times our table needed clearing.
The mains were really disappointing: tepid and over-salted. The food here used to be elevated vegetarian but this evening it was just average to poor.
We were going to have puddings, but after the mains we decided to cut our losses. Thank goodness we did as the meal cost us £96! One cocktail, one mocktail, a bottle of mineral water, 2 starters and 2 mains. Far too pricey for what we were served. What a shame. I hope The Gate can turn itself around.

We had a fantastic birthday lunch here. Everything was delicious. Service was good. A lovely hidden gem in Hammersmith.

The Gate Hammersmith used to be so good. We used to go often to enjoy the tasty food and the friendly service. But last night's dinner was a total disappointment. Here's what's wrong:
1. The service: We sat down and ordered our food, appetiser came within 5-6 minutes. After that we waited AN HOUR for our main. Diners who sat down after us had gotten their food but we were just waiting with zero acknowledgement from the staff. 3 of them made eye contact repeatedly and seeing that there's no food on our table. But nobody bothered to tell us the reason for the delay. They just let us sit at the empty table for an hour. I finally asked a lady server whether our food was gonna come. She went to check with the kitchen and she said it would be 2 minutes. The food did finally come after 2 minutes as she said. but we ended up having to rush because we had a show to catch afterwards.
2. The food: I ordered a Thai green curry with aubergine. It probably had 5 tiny pieces of aubergine in it, and an overwhelming amount of pineapple. it was like someone accidentally spilled a whole can of chopped pineapple in my food; making it VERY sweet. It almost looked like they ran out of aubergine and tried to fill the plate with pineapples.

Delicious fresh food in a light and airy restaurant. Very friendly service. All of the dishes were excellent. Thank you!

After a hot and weary day, what a pleasure it was to rest and eat our dinner at The Gate. It was cool and quiet inside (we booked early), the staff were attentive and warm, the food delicious. We both went for the Thai Green curry, which was well-flavoured and zingy, and on this very hot day split a dessert of sorbet. Soft drinks only today, and I highly recommend my lychee and rose crush. Fed and rested, we went off to enjoy our gig at Hammersmith!

Poor experience from the outset.
I made a booking 3 days prior attending and on the day of the booking, my time was modified without any checking/discussion with me. I?d booked for family coming out of town, and already enroute so I had to call the venue to insist and rearrange my table booking to the time I?d originally fixed, which they did.
It was not explained to me why they?d changed my time without discussion.
When we were seated there were 3-4 other tables also with guests, less than a quarter of their capacity. we ordered drinks, starters and mains.
Starters came and were ok. Plates were collected, but then we were waiting in excess of 25mins more for our mains to follow, we queried staff when they?d be coming (at which point the restaurant was now full). We were told the kitchen was given our main order 5mins ago, we asked them to recheck as this did not make sense. We were then told the kitchen was given our order 10mins ago, when our starter plates were collected and we corrected them again, explaining our starter plates were collected 25mins earlier.
The staff then checked and returned saying our mains were now being cooked. 10mins later 3 of our 4 mains were served but one guest was still waiting her main order which arrived split 5 and 10 minutes later again.
Staff then explained the delay was due kitchen had lost our ticket order for the mains - but the table staff are recording our orders on iPads, so this doesn?t make sense.
The final delayed item (chips) were offered free by way as apology. The other 2 chip servings (with beetroot burgers) were lukewarm and soggy. The food overall was very average at best.
Two of our table are vegetarian and vegan, and were both underwhelmed by the quality of the meals served.
Given the prices we expected much, much better for the food and service.
Needless to say we won?t be returning.

The Gate in Hammersmith is a hidden gem that truly delivers on every front. A fully vegetarian restaurant, it offers expertly cooked, beautifully presented dishes at surprisingly reasonable prices.
The space itself is stunning. Housed in a converted art studio, the restaurant has a light, airy feel thanks to its large windows and minimalist yet warm decor. The atmosphere is relaxed but refined, making it perfect for both casual meals and special occasions. Our server was outstanding, almost single-handedly running front of house with charm, efficiency, and attentiveness and he really elevated the whole experience.
It?s worth noting that the entrance can be a bit tricky to spot: you?ll need to head through a small gate into a courtyard, then up a set of stairs. Once inside, you?re immediately greeted and seated with a smile.
I ordered the Chipotle Wild Mushroom. The dish was flavourful and bold, with the chipotle sauce bringing a genuine spicy kick, which was a welcome surprise. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly, and the presentation was immaculate.
Another in our group had the Tortilla. This was equally well-received, with a balanced blend of flavours and textures that made for a hearty, satisfying meal.
We also shared the Chunky Herb Polenta Fries with a garlic & lemon aioli, an absolute must-order! The seasoning was spot on, Bold without being overpowering, and the aioli paired beautifully.
We?d happily recommend The Gate to anyone, vegetarian or not. Just be sure to book in advance if there?s a show at the Hammersmith Apollo!

We were recommended to come by a friend in Los Angeles and we?re so glad we did. We were greeted very warmly by the staff and the food was to die for! I wish I could come back again tomorrow, but we?re heading home. We had the beetroot burger, polenta fries, green Thai curry, and for appetizers we had the plantain fritters and Korean style tofu. For dessert we had lychee cheesecake and apple & rhubarb crumble. We aren?t vegetarian or vegan but we all agreed it was our best meal in the 10 days of traveling to Paris, Brussels and London! The flavors were incredible and the portions were just right. Luigi took excellent care of us, and we had a couple good laughs with him, and we even met the owner Michael. So patient, kind, and our teens loved it too! Thank you to The Gate Hammersmith!!! Please open in LA!
