I had a disappointing experience at this Waterstones. The cashier (elderly woman) was impatient and dismissive towards me, a POC customer, yet was very friendly and engaging with the white customer in front of me. The disparity in service was noticeable and made me feel unwelcome. This happened on 28th Aug.

Really unfriendly experience yesterday the 20/01/25. A young brunette with shoulder length brown hair was incredibly unfriendly. I said hello when I went to the till, she ignored me and took my item and pointed to the card machine. I asked if I could use my points card she told I could not due to price of purchase and said to me to tap my card. When I purchased my item I said thank you, bye to her and she turned from me to talk and laugh about something else to her female colleague behind her.
Let me say this, this is not the first time I have experienced this service from this woman. I have seen her friendly to other customers who look like her, but not to those who look like me and I will say no more. It is apparent that she thinks its okay to treat certain customers this way, first in 2024, then now in 2025. I don't know if her problem is with me, which is ridiculous as we don't know each other, or if it's due to unconditional prejudice on her part. All I know is, I have been going to this shop since I was a child and buying hundreds of books and I do not deserve to be treated like this whenever she serves me. I prefer the older woman who works here, friendly to everyone or the non binary person who used to work there, this woman however treats me with scorn and the management needs to have a word, if they ever read reviews, which I doubt. If she is the manager, then god help us.

I went here to check the philosophy and religious section, turns out the majority of the store is mainly fiction and there is no philosophy section. Most of what you can find about is either Marxist and progressive literature.

I was really shocked to be told they would not accept my £10.00 note from Northern Ireland. It was a legitimate note from Ulster Bank. If I hailed from that part of the UK, I would have been upset by such hurtful behaviour.

So sad that in 2024 you can still find fishes in an aquarium.
Funny thing? The aquarium is Next to shelves of books of fishes and wildlife in general being in the wild.

Very nice mature lady who works here. Excellent books and choices and great atmosphere. Other staff aren't too friendly but I atleast love how well kept the shop is after years of me going in
