Possibly the best pub in Essex. The Compasses Inn is located in a spectacular location which makes it almost unique. The service and friendliness of the staff puts it into a class of its own. The veins that run through this heartbeat of a business is family heritage, 6 generations and it shows in every corner of their services from food, drink, accommodation right up to the personal pride. I tried the famous Huffer O.T.T which was amazing while enjoying the sunshine outdoors. Also ate indoors another evening with a fantastic omelette and chips. The draughts on offer are more than you get at most city venue pubs and you must try the Moonshine cider if you?re a thatchers cider fan, it is delicious. I can?t praise this village rural pub and accommodation in Essex enough. I can?t wait to return in the near future to bring some friends and family. 10/10

A cheeky stop over at the end of road trip. A cheeky welcome & excellent food. Like the 3 sea shells in demolition man, we were amused by the enigma that was one mug for two people.

Great little unspoilt country pub which was formerly the 'Brewery Tap' of the Ridleys Brewery which was taken over by Greene King in 2005. However this pub was retained by the Ridley family and the site has been developed to include quality accommodation though the pub remains as was.
Good selection of mainly Essex real ales including beers from Bishop Nick brewery operated by Nelson Ridley. his establishment is renowned for it's Essex Huffers - whopper of a roll or bap, triangular in shape filled with a huge variety of fillings.
This is a place full of history and not to be missed!

The definition of a quality traditional country pub. Dog friendly, strong sense of community and amazing food and drink. I come here with family, colleagues and for work meetings for those visiting.
It does not fail to please. The staff are always polite even when it's busy, and it's always very clean. The menu is a fantastic size and it's easy to keep going back and having something new. I love this place!
Food and drinks: Renowned for its Huffer sandwiches, the fillings are authentic and wholesome. At the same time you can have your pub classics. The chicken curry is amazing..... Or you can have the specials which aren't just 1 or 2 at a time! So much choice, and it has never affected the quality. I've never left hungry or upset!

This was our second visit following a recommendation. What a difference between the 2, couldn?t fault the first, we visited for an evening meal with our autistic son. We ordered a plain chicken burger which came out with cheese! We managed to avoid a complete meltdown. The remaining meals were given to someone else having waited over an hour. It was only when the waitress realised that we were acknowledged and our order moved to the top of the list for the chef. I ended up eating my dinner using the light on my phone as it had gone dark in the garden! It would have been nice to have been offered a drink or something while we waited for the mistake to be rectified
I was considering making a booking for a birthday celebration but I?m now reconsidering. Such a disappointment as it?s a lovely setting for a late summer treat.
