Visited on Tuesday, 17th June 2025, after a walk around the basin. It was mid-afternoon, and the bar was dirty and piled with unwashed glasses. The kitchen had closed, and all that was available were bar snacks and drinks. Inside, the bar had a 1970s/80s vibe and is in need of a refurb and probably more staff. Nice outdoor seating, but suggest you stop for a drink and eat elsewhere.

Went here today with some mates on bikes & in Morgans.
A basic honest pub with good food & ale at fair prices.
Great views of the basin & people watching.

Big old pub with great views out to the Blackwater and Heybridge lock. Open all through the weekend for visitors and walkers. The beer was decent, with a few choices of ale on tap.

A disappointing visit to what?s usually a lovely visit!
Went here today as we visited The Basin for a walk with the dogs. Outside always looks so busy with people stopping for a drink and we decided today to eat. Was told 30 minutes for food which consisted of two main meals off their specials board and a portion of chips. Food turned up 1 hour and 20 minutes later after asking twice how long it would be to be told it was being plated up. The pub was not busy inside and there was not a lot of people eating.
One of our meals was the hunter chicken burger and my husband was looking forward to it but when it arrived on the table he was deflated. It consisted of a piece of chicken in batter that didn?t even fill the bun, a slice of bacon that was mostly gristle with plastic cheese melted on the bottom of the bun. The bun was not even a big burger bun it was a small bap like you get in a kids meal at McDonalds. Very disappointing.
The steak and ale pie though that was also on the specials board was lovely so it wasn?t all bad but this review needed to be given as we were so disappointed.

We eat Here quite often
And this week I asked if they could do me some roast dinners as a takeaway and that was for six of us
Omg What a roast dinner this was
Meat exceptional vegetables totally amazing plenty of variety and cooked perfectly
Home-made Yorkshire puddings, unbeatable roast potatoes again unbeatable home-made Gravy to top it all off
I cannot thank staff and the owners enough for letting me do this. We were there again yesterday and we had the prawn baguette and some garlic mushrooms and a ham baguette and again. Cannot throw anything
Everyone makes you feel welcome. The staff are amazing in fact the whole place is brilliant and we wouldn?t go anywhere else.
Again, thank you all very, very much
