The photos on the internet really don?t do this place justice. I thoroughly recommend going on an open day (third Sunday of every month) it was filled with plenty of arts and crafts stalls, plenty of hot and cold food options, coffees, teas, alcohol. Harlow brass band provided a lovely atmosphere. Lots of different types of classic cars and owners happy to chat.
The house itself has plenty to explore, Georgian bedrooms, kitchen and stables and had lots of old Georgian clothing and household items to take you back in time.
The garden has lots of lovely open spaces to walk, or to chill/have a picnic. The walled garden is a must, although you?ll face a bit of a steeped hill getting back to the house which might not be suitable for everyone?s mobility. I would skip the rock garden, it was quite a walk and not much there, although again it was very peaceful.
Thoroughly recommended and thankyou to all the volunteers that were working very hard all day.

Had a good time at the open day. The grounds and hall have something to interest everybody. Enjoyed the car show and the brass band.

A shame about the land owners, I was told by one that only cars are allowed on their private road, I asked why and he drove erratically, speeding dangerously away.
I'll be keeping away from this private estate and it's petrol headed dinosaurs. If you visit the house keep your kids close by, the locals drive like they don't want you alive.

Went for the open day.
The most wonderful place! You can go anywhere, the walked garden is so beautiful and the underground kitchen is fascinating.
The people are lovely and know everything about the place, you can hear the passion in their voices.
The gardener we came across in the walled garden used to play there as a child! Then we met another, who is newly responsible for the restoration of the boarders outside the walls, took us to where the sunken rock garden is. Just lovely people.
There was music, ice cream, stalls and amazing blacksmith?s included! Wonderful bakery stall too and classic cars!
Can?t wait to back, perhaps in the winter to see the change in the gardens?
Go! Oh and a massive lawnmower collection in the stables ?

Wow- love this hidden gem of history and conservation- apparently it changes every time you go thanks to all the amazing work the Trust and volunteers are doing. I thoroughly enjoyed a guided tour today around the house, grounds and beautiful walled garden. Definitely worth a visit.

Visited on Easter Sunday 2025 - we went here just for an Easter Egg hunt which all I got to say was reasonably boring. Why? There were a bunch of younger children there? not coming back.m
I took some great pictures though:

Brilliant place to explore and enjoy for all ages, opportunitiee to get involved as a volunteer too. The cafe has a fantastic range of homemade cakes and jams. The refurbishment includes well thought out and maintained WC facilities.

The last time I visited was around 13 years ago. I've wanted to visit again for ages but live a distance away now.
My friend & I visited on a guided tour Sunday of the gardens & house. The same friend & I, when we were in our teens, around 1991, we would hike up to the house & explore. Back then, it was literally the walls of the house standing, totally fascinating then. So, to visit now, all these years later & to see how far the house has come in the last 30 years, quite amazing. Our guide (I think the ladies name was Becky), she was full of knowledge. I didn't actually know there had been a medieval mansion on the land prior. It is said, Henry the eighth was here awaiting news of Anne Bolyns execution. All the renovations have been done with money donated. The main staircase which is being replaced step by step has been possible but the money raised in the onsite book shop. Each step is nearly £2000, that's a lot of books.
If you love history, old houses, renovation & preservation, this is a perfect day out. They have lots of different events & open days. I'll look forward to returning in the summer when everything is in bloom & a tour of the upper floors. I won't leave it as long next time.
