My first surprise at Skinners was discovering they cook in beef dripping, my favourite medium. The second was biting into the best chips I?ve had across 150 fish and chip shop reviews; they were incredible. The large cod lived up to its name, wrapped in crisp, flavoursome batter, while the mushy peas were spot on, thick enough for the fork yet smooth enough to mingle with the fish and chips.
The staff were smartly presented, polite, and full of smiles, and the shop itself was spotless, tidy, and well designed. All in all, I?ll be back.

Been coming here for over 18 years and authough it's changed managers several times it's always been the nicest chip shop in Clacton by far.
Edit 2025: had to drop this review down because the chips have changed in the last few months and are now hard/rubbery and no where near as nice as they used to be.

Ordered food on phone for 7 people, was told to collect in 20 mins.
Got there and food not ready, kept waiting for around 15 mins. Guy kept saying sorry and gave a free bottle of coke. Food was horrible, greasy fish and chips were dry. The place was not even busy.

Top notch food, freshly prepared, absolutely delicious, my rock fish was the best I've ever had and both kids licked their plates clean, that's a first in this family!!

Skinners is one of the best fish and chip shops I?ve been to. The meals are amazing value for money - with the fish meal comprising of chips, a cod (very good size!), a side and a drink. This is enough to feed both me and my partner (the 1st time we went, we ordered an extra cod which we didn?t end up needing!). I?ve been in there twice and the 2nd time the staff recognised us and made a real effort to speak to us and recommend other places in the area for cake and sweets.
The quality of the food is amazing, the best fish and chip shop I?ve been to - nothing left to say really.
