Recently stopped here for coffee and we were served by the most pleasant and helpful young gentleman called Louis. He really went above and beyond, suggesting alternatives (as some items were out of stock) and being so thoughtful to cater for our concerns. He really is a true credit to the Waterstones cafe.

I found this cafe after I went in to look for a book. Very pleasant atmosphere and it remains one of my favorites. Also, only nice people go to this cafe, quiet people who work and study, not noisy and unpleasant like other cafes. The atmosphere is so relaxing and pleasant.

Lovely book shop with a good cafe upstairs

A lovely and quiet little retreat in the busy High Street. The cafe upstairs offers nice cakes and drinks with reasonable prices in nice surroundings. Recommended for people enjoying having a cuppa in a quiet environment.

My favourite place to go in Chelmsford to meet up with friends in the café

Visited the cafe and they do the best toast and toast it properly not like most places that just give you warm bread. Good strong coffee too and a good place to relax. It's situated at the top of Waterstones book shop.

A customer politely asked if she could sit at a table while her relative shopped. To my horror, she was told she needed to make a purchase to sit at a table. To add insult to injury, the store was empty. That's not a customer centric attitude to customer service. Come on guys, let your Brand be about LOVE of all things, not just books and profit. I felt injured by the injustice to a fellow human being.

? Lots of cake & sandwich choices; ?? Good chai latte but disappointing cappuccino; ??? Spacious for studying & no laptop policy although the wifi is nearly non-usable in my corner seat; ???? Friendly & accommodating staff (even asked me to smell the powder when I asked if the chai latte is sweet or spicy!).

The cafe is OK. I did think it was overpriced and found it very cheeky that they added a 50p charge for whipped cream on my black forest mocha and didn't tell that there would be an extra charge. To be quite honest the woman who served me didn't have a clue herself I don't think. When I ordered it she looked at the menu in front of me and goes 'oh does it come with whipped cream?'. It didn't state that there would be any extra charge and the image showed it came with it. It was supposed to be £3.10 for the black forest mocha and obviously she took it upon herself to charge me more and not let me know! Black forest traditionally it made with cream so... Its not the expense, its the cheek and slyness of it. The coffee itself was very bitter and the only 'black forest' bit about it was the drizzle of cherry sauce on top! Didn't give zero stars as I was pleasantly surprised there was a gluten free option that was actually quite nice but still very overpriced for a bookstore cafe.. I think it was nearly £5.
