Visited the pub today. Possibly a bit stark compared to some pubs but very friendly welcome and great service. Had the ultimate toasted sandwich, very tasty and amazing value.

Food & drinks: Food is awful. Drinks selection limited. Bossy manager. We were attending a function for farmers & the manager would not allow our little terrier to syay. Surprising as the bar staff said it was fine & there were several dogs in the bar..At least saved us from the food which looked revolting.

Full of history in the beautiful village of Burwash. The home of Rudyard Kipling and mentioned in the doomsday book.

I have travelled to over 50 countries in the last 30 years and dined at all types of establishments. The Bear Inn restaurant experiences the 5 of us had......ranked among the most disgusting and disappointing on several fronts. The toilets, especially the men and disabled- were unhygienic and filthy. The meals we were served would not even be suitable for people living on the streets. Infact 2 of the 5 meals we ordered were so bad, they were not eaten and taken back to the kitchen by the waitress. We struggled with eating some of the food on the others. Whoever prepared the prawn cocktails, ceaser salada jacket potatoes, tuna and cheese and the other meals we ordered- need lessons in how to prepare, cook and serve quality meals to the paying public. Two means were taken off the bill. The service attitude of the lady who served us, reminded us of someone been pulled off the street with no professionalism or positive attitude in customer service skill. No thank you. No enquiry if we enjoy our meals. No asking if we needed any alternatives. Just below zero standards on so many fronts. Sad....especially with such stunning rear view location in Burwash!

POOR SERVICE...POOR FOODWe visited the pub on 13/09/23 to have what we highly expected would be quality meals and excellent service. All 5 of us came to the view....we had nothing but POOR quality, overcooked, and substandard meals. TWO meals were so poorly cooked and presented, the waitress agreed to discard them.Prawn cocktails were served with a few lettuce looking like they had passed sell-by date. A few prawns wuth a dash of sauce were placed on top with a slice of lemon. That was it.We did not eat more than a morsel! No cutlery were provided. We were given large forks when we asked for prawn cocktail cutlery. One meal we asked for No raw onions because of likely allergic reactions....we were served onions!Jacket potatoe, tuna and cheeses .The tiny bits of tuna was plastered with sauce and definitely not how quality Jacket potato is normally served. No customer service enquiry about whether we enjoyed the meals or had any concerns. However, after we pointed out the poor quality of the foods, two of the meals and 2 drinks were taken off the final bill of £101.The toilets were filthy, inadequately stocked and unkempt. The conservatory dining area had poor ventilation. We asked for the doors leading to the garden to be opened.A pub not recommended based on our poor experience and poor quality service.

Good food and beer on tap. We called in as passing and were able to grab a table and the last couple of parking spaces in the car park. Food was tasty and had a good pint of Harvey's on tap too, which always goes down well.

Good room at a good price. The morning view over the valley from my patio was just marvellous. No breakfast, but not a problem as there is a great little cafe in the village (not even 100m away).

We stayed for one night while exploring the area. Check-in was welcoming and easy (didn't bother with the online check-in)....the room was large, clean and the beds were very comfy. Basics supplied....tea tray, mini-fridge, TV, extra pillows, but this is a 'no-frills' establishment. Not a problem as we knew this in advance. Positives: great location, parking right outside room, patio doors straight to garden, stunning views over countryside from adjacent pub garden, meals at the adjoining pub The Bear were plentiful and tasty, the pub was lovely and the staff were friendly, our room was clean, spacious, comfy and had a good shower. Negatives (causing me to only give 4 stars): no breakfast available on our stay, everything in room made a noise (one bed very squeaky, floorboards creaked a lot), bathroom window wouldn't shut and had only frosted glass (no blind), tea tray basic. The positives outweighed the negatives and the negatives may seem nit-picky, but we had paid only £10 more on the previous night at a different place and got quite a lot more for the extra £10, both in the room and by it including breakfast. However, would still return here if in this area...there's no reason not to....and would especially visit the pub.

The receptionist told me the booking system was down, but allocated me a room and wrote this down on a sheet of paper. I checked into my room, and left my bag in the wardrobe and my glasses and a bottle of nail varnish on the table. I went off to a party with friends - also staying at the hotel - at 2.30 pm. We returned at about 1.30 am. When I went into my room, I noticed an empty, used wine glass in the tea-making outer hall and a pair of muddy walking boots. I was anxious and called two of my friends to join me, as I opened the door to the bedroom. A woman was sleeping in my bed. She sat bolt-upright, looking very disoriented and bleary-eyed. She asked what was happening. She had also paid for the room and I asked her why she hadn't questioned my bag, glasses and nail varnish being there. She said she didn't think about it!!! I told her to go back to sleep, gathered my things and left. I searched for someone from the hotel to help me and, eventually, found the receptionist from the day before. She said they had realised the mistake and gave many excuses for my room having been reallocated. I asked why they hadn't tried to let me know, or at least put a note on the door to alert me. No response! She apologised, said I would be compensated and she would allocate me another room, "...which didn't have anyone in"! They did give me another room, which was clean, but in the midst of being decorated! The following morning, I went to check out and discuss the issues with the landlord. He took a very aggressive stance, even though I explained events in a calm and very professional manner. He said "Well, I don't know what you're moaning about - you had a bed didn't you?". No concern shown for the disruption of the poor woman in my original room, or my own anxiety at the situation. He made so many excuses, no sign of apology and had a what-do-you-want-me-to-do-about-it? attitude. He refused to discuss the situation further and said he wanted me to leave, then shouted "Go on, get out!". I have never been treated so belligerently. I would not advise anyone else to book this place. I have no confidence in their booking processes, security on site or customer service.
