I obtained this card for nothing more than a status symbol. They don't give it to everyone, so I felt pleased to be accepted. I am really good with managing my finances, and I felt proud. I also heard that you'd generally get better treatment by having one. I was a big fan and pretty much only used my American Express card for anywhere that accepted it. I recommended it to friends. But I had a dispute with a large merchant who mis-sold me an item by saying they'd accept a return if there was any issue with it, and they refused when I brought it back the same day.I opened a dispute and while the retailer provided three sheets of evidence, I have provided at least 10 pages of considerable evidence even showing how the retailer was lying, and on top of that accusing me of fraud without any evidence whatsoever to back up that allegation. American Express sided with the retailer and ignored all of the evidence I submitted.I have always paid off my balance in full every statement so I owed nothing at this point. I simply asked to cancel my account. This business is the worst. When you REALLY need them, they will let you down.For small disputes like app store apps that don't function well, they will probably accept and give you a refund. However, for anything more serious and expensive forget getting any fair treatment.The hassle of managing this card, having to ask merchants if it's accepted, having the card declined on machines because they're not sure and then having to use another card, and the pitiful cashback/points rules that constantly become less advantageous just makes this a pointless product. You want airport Lounge access? Just buy it separately on each occasion. There's no point (pun intended) in using this garbage anymore.As for the intial assumption that this would provide me higher status and better treatment at merchants? It never happened. It's just their marketing making you think it's more exclusive.American Express is literally hated by many merchants who often commented how it costs them more to accept it.It felt embarrassing when they said so. When a merchant says something like that, it makes you feel dirty, as if you're stealing their profit. It makes you feel worse. Sometimes I complained about them not accepting Amex, thinking that Amex was on my side so I should defend it, but now I realize how silly I was sometimes to walk out of a shop because they didn't accept it, as the service from Amex is absolute trash.The points/cashback? Not worth it. To qualify you have to hit targets and if you close your account down for any reason, you lose whatever was accumulated. Banks like Chase/Natwest already offer cashback on daily purchases from many retailers.Get a VISA Infinite branded card instead, they are satisfactory and accepted in any shop without hassles.

I have used American Express for a long time and the service has always being excellent. I payed my card off today and I just want to thank Louise who was dealing with me over the phone! She was excellent and gave great service. I love using American Express?
