How disappointing? courtyard is lovely but the food was poorly prepared and extortionately priced. £24 for 5 pieces of dry beetroot tortelloni with no sauce and £14 for a ?gazpacho? that was, inexplicably, served with chunks of avocado in it and Parmesan flakes on the top. £240 for 4 people, 2 courses and no alcohol? the hotel inspector should be doing better than this!
p.s. do note that they don?t accept Amex cards because ?their charges are extortionate? to quote the somewhat grumpy maitre d?. That was irony I assume.

This is an exquisite hotel, we decided to stay here as we were going to see the Air Show in Eastbourne but didn't want to stay there, and The Star is only 20 minutes away.
The communication before we arrived was excellent and when we pulled up into the car park, a lovely gentleman from the front desk had already come out to help us with our bags. After a quick and efficient check-in, one of our rooms was ready early so we took our bags up before going out for the day. The room exceeded our expectations in terms of design, comfort and layout.
The overall style is just stunning, everything is where it should be and the bed looked so inviting. That's the feeling that you want when you enter a hotel room, that you can't wait to get back there and relax and feel special. It's clear that a lot of love. care and attention has gone into every room and every fixture and fitting. I even loved the ceramic bowl on the sideboard to drop your keys into and the delicious homemade ginger biscuits in a little tin. It felt fresh and airy and light, and so well maintained, it felt like it had just opened.
When we returned and our second room was ready, we opened the interconnecting doors and didn't want to leave. The bathroom was beautiful and the shower had superb pressure. Even the bloomin toilet seat was comfortable.
The hotel feels very calm and relaxing throughout. The staff are wonderful, even if they've had expert training, their individual personalities shine through as well.
We had an excellent dinner in the restaurant, cannot fault anything, a gorgeous martini to unwind with after a day out, a great selection of wines, a small menu but still hard to choose, which immediately lets you know that they are using fresh produce, less is definitely more with a good menu. The kids menu was perfect too, our daughter was spoilt for choice.
We slept beautifully, it is so peaceful and the bedding is divine. I actually slept better than I had in weeks.
Now to breakfast - I recently stayed at the Capella Hotel in Sydney on a work trip, which I thought could not be bettered, until now. I can honestly say this is the best breakfast I've ever had in a hotel, my wife and daughter felt the same, it is of the highest quality. There was plenty of choice, the produce was exceptional, incredible service, we sat outside in the courtyard, it was bliss.
I don't have anything negative to say about our stay at The Star, other than it was over too quickly. We can't wait to return.

We stopped off for drinks at The Star yesterday evening, on our way home to Eastbourne, after a lovely day out in our beautiful home county of Sussex. We were made to feel very welcome by the friendly, approachable staff and enjoyed our drinks whilst we sat in the beautiful courtyard. The additional snacks, provided free of charge with our drinks, were an unexpected and hospitable touch. We haven?t been to The Star since it has been under new management and we were very impressed. Wonderful attention to detail, gorgeous decor, and a relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be returning!

Turned up early evening and sat in courtyard waiting to be served. After 15 minutes had not been approached or acknowledged by staff.
After another 5 minutes guests who arrived after us had their order taken.
As the waiter left them another table waved at him and asked if they could have drinks as they had been waiting.
We gave up and went inside into the bar. Asked to see the cocktail menu but they couldn't find one.
In the end we negotiated a drink and sat at a table.
Whilst there I saw one of the bar staff make a long cocktail drink. Unbelievably I watched her remove one of the straws in the glass and put it in her mouth to taste the drink.
All straws put in glasses of drink are with unwashed hands.
£50 for 4 pints of beer and one cocktail. Staff unprofessional and absolutely gave the wrong impression of what we had been informed was a top quality establishment.

My partner and I took our first venture to the Star on Sunday and we were treated to a wonderful experience. The food was exceptional and the accompanying Pomerol was excellent, and considering it?s a hotel and restaurant, I thought sensibly priced. (We own a wine business and believe me, this was spot on) The service was impeccable throughout from Theresa and her team, and the ambience was perfect. I also have to say that the espresso that I had was the best I?ve tasted outside of Italy. Maybe Alex?s heritage created that! In fact, you could feel her attention to detail throughout. We plan to return with friends and we wouldn?t hesitate to recommend the Star to our friends in Rye

Beautifully appointed rooms offering countryside charm with modern amenities. But what made it a memorable experience was the staff - everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming, particularly to our one year old daugher. They went above and beyond to say hello to her, smile at her, and make sure we had everything we needed. If I was staying in Alfriston again (which I hope to do), we would absolutely stay again. 5 star experience.

Lovely cosy pot of tea by the fire. Beautiful fresh flowers on the tables and little heart biscuits for valentine's day. Thank you

We recently spent a couple of nights at the Star. We had a pretty perfect stay - there is a lovely calm to the hotel and I felt the stresses falling off my shoulders within half an hour. The food and drinks and service were perfect, as was the ambience - lovely dining room and lovely courtyard to choose from for lunch or dinner. It?s such a beautiful area to stay in. We didn?t need the car and just enjoyed the beautiful countryside - The walk to Berwick Church Was particularly beautiful. It?s an unflashy relaxing place to be. I have the impression that everything has been carefully thought out to make you stay as relaxing and carefree as possible - and couple that with lovely staff and you have yourself a lovely place to be. My only feedback and it?s subjective, is that we found the bed too firm . We can?t wait to visit again.
