Visited for Sunday lunch. Very friendly staff, promptly took orders for drinks and food. Served in reasonable time. We had the 2 courses for £21. Enjoyed the chilli beef starter, very generous portion sizes. The beef was well cooked on the roast main, lamb ok, but most other things on the plate were under seasoned and bland and the Yorkshire pudding quite doughy on the bottom. Roast potatoes were ok, but not crispy at all. The cauliflower cheese was basically just steamed, with cheese melted in top. A decent gravy could have saved the day, but that didn't have much flavour either and was quite gelatinous in consistency.
Overall rated good due to staff and ambience, but food was average. I probably won't be back for the Sunday roast, but would be happy visit again during the week to try other things on the main menu.

We had a small gathering for a retirement yesterday, 12 of us. Pre orders put in a week before. Everything was utterly seamless. Every meal was beautiful. The staff were brilliant

Pretty banging Sunday dinner at The Mowden.
Very nice serving size for my two meats and everything else you?d expect for a Sunday roast.
The Oreo and Nutella sundae sent me into a sugar coma not long after getting home. Waitress was quick to swap my spoons out as my original couldn?t reach the bottom of the glass ?

A very friendly place, staff very helpful and easy to talk to, food lovely I had Weardale Chicken,and it was delicious , lots of choice on the menu will go again and recommend to family and friends

The food is terrible not to mention waited over 1.30h for the food to be served! The bar has a lifetime long queue!

Good overall - just felt sorry for the 1 bar maid behind the bar, and the 1 waitress who was taking food orders, bringing orders to tables, clearing tables, seating new arrivals etc. This ultimately impacted how long it took for us to place a food order, and then receive it. 1pm on a bank holiday Monday should have more staff on shift! Otherwise, a great pub with good food and lots of choice on the menu! We will return!

Went for food never got any food as stood at the bar for 20 minutes while being completely ignored by staff as they would rather serve their friends first.

Why on Saturday afternoon when the whole of the main bar has all its tables reserved will they not open the back room so that you can just have a drink. I have been going in the pub for over 30 years and have never been unable to get a seat.
I presume that the management do not want drinkers they have managed to lose all their regulars
This happened at 3pm on Saturday afternoon and the back room was empty at least four more people walked out at the same time expressing their disappointment at not just being able to get a drink at their local a bit more consideration needs to be given to people who just want a drink
