I visited on the evening of 20 August 2025 and met the new owner and her two lovely front of house staff. A very warm welcome from walking in the door. The atmosphere was delightful, all the home comforts of a country pub but with a slight french bistro twist.
Local ales did not disappoint and the wine list was good.
The food was exceptional. We had the Deviled Seafood Gratin and Smoked Haddock Rarebit to start. Both great. The gratin was light, flavousome and packed with seafood.
The rarebit was amazing. Possibly the best piece of smoked haddock I have eaten as far as I can recall.
To follow was an authentic Provencial Fish Stew and the Confit Duck.
The fish stew was loaded with various fish cuts, king prawn and two types of mussels. The bisque sauce was lightly spiced and well balanced. Served with char grilled sour dough which added a unique smokiness from the char acrylamide.
Eating the confit of duck I could have closed my eyes and been in well to-do restaurant in france. The duck was cooked perfectly and fell off the bone. Better than you would find in France, it was nestled on a bed of freshly steamed beans and tenderstem broccoli (not from a tin). A few new potatoes and a lovely fruit compot/sauce on the side made this a wonderful meal.
Very much recomend booking in advance.

Beautiful old pub, with lovely new owners. Fresh and clean inside, and nice sunny garden. We did not eat here, although I bet the food is great.

We were staying locally on a short break in Dorset. We booked our table and arrived for pie&pint evening. Very friendly and welcoming landlords, comfortable and clean surrounds and plenty of locals also enjoying the evening. We loved the pies and they had a genuine home cooked with care flavour and presentation. The homemade almond sponge with custard was also excellent. We had a lovely evening, our last in Dorset, and we were glad we spent it here. Drinks were reasonably priced also.
PS I?m so sorry I knocked the photo frame off the wall when trying to straighten it! What a fanny. Thank you for being so forgiving. The new frame is on way!

We arrived at 1 on a wet Sunday half way round a long walk and were lucky enough to get a table for 2 and a great roast, plus £3 pudding. Great find.

Staying at a self catering cottage, Heartsease, nearby we?ve now eaten at the New Inn twice. I had the chicken curry and then the vegetable curry and rate the vegetable curry higher by a margin - both were delicious. My mom had the fish and chips twice and enjoyed it both times, my other half enjoyed the burger and said it was good. We love the little village of Stoke Abbott and hope to be back soon!Vegetarian options: The vegetable curry is superb! ???

One of the best Sunday Roasts we have had in a while, a cosy pub which welcomed our dog too. Great service, no rush and we felt very welcome. We booked in advance and I would recommend you do as every table seemed to be reserved - I can see why! Great food, great drinks - a real gem of place. Whilst over an hour away we combined with a walk in the local area which was beautiful also.
