The Plains was the market place for the town of Totnes until the 1950's now it is the flattest part of the town & where you catch a taxi, watch dancing (see pic) & the yearly Carnival wind up.Lots of lovely places surround it,like the Riverside cafe & in the middle,is a statue to the town's son,Wills, of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition; the first to cross Australia from south to north, & where he perished. The centenary of the death of Wills is in 2011
