I was trying to help my dad open an account. After spending an hour online filling out all the questions as an EU passport holder, we found out that he had to be checked physically at a branch. We went there on Friday around 4 pm and were referred to Chris, who was already busy with something else and didn?t seem very happy. His whole attitude was as if we were disturbing him. He rushed through the documents like he was doing us anyway a big favor by taking on extra work.
Apart from the passport to verify his ID, the documents my dad had, showing where he had been living for a couple of years, weren?t deemed good enough. They required a utility bill?"Sure, Dad, you pay my bills so you can open a bank account!". A GP letter, a hospital appointment letter, something from the DWP, or a statement from his other bank also weren?t accepted.
I asked to speak to a manager, who was nicer and willing to help, but by then, it was too late. The whole experience made us feel like we were stuck in the 20th century, dealing with an outdated system that doesn?t understand that modern banking is done online. Nationwide has 63% older users, so maybe it makes sense for them to offer these services.
As for the brand itself? I will avoid it forever. No remortgages, no credit cards?never again. My advice: just avoid Nationwide altogether.

Went in to open an account, wanting help and reassurance however was told to just sit and do it ourselves on the iPad, we like to go into the shops for the assistance otherwise could have done it online? The lady didn?t seem very bothered or keen to help at all

I have been with nationwide for years and it's still the best place to keep your money on the highstreet. The staff and friendly and approachable. I've had a few problems with them in the pass that they sorted out professionally. They are not a bank they are better. They know most of there customers who come though the door and I hope they will stand by there customers and not support a cashless society. I'm against it because we all need help from time to time from our building society's. I find it easier to pop in and chat sbout any problems with my accounts and if I need any help I can pop into my local branch. Thanks nationwide for not getting rid of any building society's and may u help other customers in the same way should they open an account with you.

It took me two visits and an hour and a half to open a five year fixed rate bond. The impression I am left with is Nationwide do not want the inconvenience of customers in their branches. Less customers, less staff more branch closures.Customers are now it expected to do the work staff once did.Eventually the staff helped me and were patience, but the Head Office structure is Do It Yourself.
