What an enigma wrapped up in a conundrum the Endsleigh is. The location is delightful and very restful, and the gardens, dell and waterfall make for a lovely stroll next to the river; a perfect way to work up a thirst for drinks back at the house in front of one of the roaring log fires. The house is overwhelmingly dark wood panelled, and a few parts of the public areas are, perhaps, a little tired, though some may mischievously suggest the trend of shabby chic is at play? Staff on front desk are welcoming and helpful with a guide to our room also offering to help with bags. Rooms was nice - very large and comfy bed, garden view and fresh fruit/nuts provided but no tea or coffee making (it can be ordered from the front desk), which given the room prices, felt a little off. Bathroom had only a roll-top bath with hand-held shower head, which was a little disappointing. Ordering drinks in afternoon the library (there is no formal bar), was a little frustrating as it took so long for anyone to take an order. Good selection of spirits and wines, and premium priced as one would expect. Dinner is a three-course offering, at £70pp, plus service, with four selections for each course. Treacle cured salmon was good, escabeche of red mullet was very delicate and full of flavour; Dukka crusted duck main was superb - beautifully cooked (pink) and accompanied with artichoke, carrots and other veg; some very nice cooking here. The cheese plate was a delight with Godminster cheddar and Sharpham brie being the stand outs. Wine list is as you would expect - loaded with encouragement to 'trade up' and venture to new areas, but their nominal 'house red', a South African at £32, was very drinkable and suited us perfectly. Staff in the restaurant were very friendly an attentive. One niggle was being charged for a cup of tea at the end of the meal - having spent £172 (plus 12.5% service) on dinner, it felt churlish to then charge for a single pot of tea, but maybe others will disagree. The restaurant itself is modestly formal - white tablecloth and dark wood panels suggest it perhaps best suits a certain clientele who prefer their fine dining with one eye on days long gone. More modern tastes might prefer a little more fun and and less 'starched' approach but whatever your preference there is no denying the food is very accomplished. I enjoyed the Endsleigh, but it didn't excite me the way some other places do (The Pig Hotel group for instance, which of course might not be to others tastes, but I rather like their offering of not taking itself too seriously), and accordingly The Endsleigh felt a little over priced by comparison. Others, of course, may disagree!

Great hotel and lovely surroundings. You feel like you're in a small castle. Our room was very large and had a great view of the park-like garden.

Afternoon tea at the most idyllic country house and garden. 'Endsleigh', created by the architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville and landscape designer Humphrey Repton for Georgina, Duchess to the 6th Duke of Bedford. The house dates from 1810 and has incredible views over the River Tamar. The gardens are beautiful and free to view if you have booked afternoon tea.

Disappointed! Went for an afternoon tea to experience this lovely high class hotel and restaurant but was let down, The things that went wrong were they bought the afternoon tea in the wrong order so we had the desserts turning up before we had had the cream and jam scones which were brought out in a rush once we had pointed this out to them! Which then arrived with no plates to serve them on, and on top of all that they were burnt!! Why would a chef send them if they?re not right? See photo of the burnt scone which we left and a bit embarrassed about, If you?re going to charge me five star prices, then make sure everything is five star! You can have a better cream tea in Cornwall and Devon for less money and equally if not slightly better quality, Check out the Carlyon Bay hotel, or talon Bay hotel, there are so many beautiful to see and experience at this hotel, but just a shame attention to detail was not observed.

Walked the extensive gardens next to the Tamar. Beautiful.
Cream tea on the lawn overlooking the river watching a couple play croquet. Fabulous.

We ate outside on a particularly sunny day. Obliging staff moved our table into shade without a quibble. The food was beautifully presented and the flavours were exceptional.

Beautiful building with stunning gardens, gorgeous food, and fabulous service every time - particularly lunch in the summer on the lawn. Stunning grounds and Riverside walks. Well-behaved dogs welcome.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. The day we arrived we were upgraded to a suite which was bigger than most flats. We had our dog with us and everything is set up beautifully. We had breakfast with our dog in a dining area which overlooked the gardens, all 108 acres of them which are stunning. We went for an hours walk around them and let our dog off lead which was lovely. Food and service excellent. Everywhere spotlessly clean. We will definitely go back.Rooms: ExcellentNearby activities: Lots to do but expect to travel by carSafety: Paths all properly slated and easy to walk on. Not good for wheelchairs as fairly steep in placesWalkability: Gardens are stunningFood & drinks: Locally sourced ingredients and absolutely fantastic

Came for a walk around the gardens. Katie on reception was delightful and Jade our waitress makes the best mocha I've had in a very long time. The gardens are beautiful, the waterfall and Bamboo forest were in particular
