We have just enjoyed 3 nights in the Lord Nelson room and it was superb with a view of the harbour.Huge king-size 4 poster bed which was very comfortable and spotlessly clean throughoutThe staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended and we will definitely return.Rooms: 4 poster bed and very clean comfortable plenty of room. Lovely views of the harbourNearby activities: Not too much going on as we are out of season. But the restaurant food is good. Paradise for walkersSafety: Very safe environment but considering the age of the building you must expect steps and stairs throughout.Walkability: No end to the walks you can do from hereFood & drinks: They have two bars the staff are very helpful and friendly. Breakfast is plentiful and one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had. There is plenty of tea and coffee in your room and we were given fresh milk to have in our tea, which was a kind thought. UHT is in your room but fresh is nicer. The restaurant food was all home made and Tibetan curry was delightful.

We are here this evening for the first time. We saw that there were a number of Thai and Chinese dishes on the menu which we were a little sceptical as outside of a Thai or Chinese restaurant, it's quite difficult to make this international cuisine authentic. However, we were bowled over by how good it was. Very reasonably priced too as well as friendly staff and customers. We will for sure be returning to the restaurant again upon our next trip to the area.

Absolutely love the Royal Britannia, great room, lovely staff, and amazing location.

The service in here is by far the worst i have seen in a long time. There is a woman who works nights there who seems to be incapable of talking to people in a civil manner. Probably shouldn't be doing the job but unfortunately that lets the place down.

Hotel is great, as is the location..my only issue is we booked and payed extra for 2 dog's. We were on the top floor. The room was not big enough for 2 adults let alone 2 medium sized dogs....local pubs at kick-out time created noise in the street, didn't last long but if you go to bed early it's an issue. Breakfast was good & the service - can't fault them at all on that.

After staying a night at this hotel with a bad experience and no management to speak to I skipped our second night here and sent an email to complain that went something like this....We arrived at your hotel on 07/09/23 upon checking in we were asked if we would like breakfast for an extra £8.95 each. This was stated on the buy a gift website as been included for both mornings. After locating our room, we then walked into an overpowering smell of damp so wanted to open the window immediately. We pulled back the curtains to find a window so filthy you could barely see through it? maybe this was to stop the beer garden across the street from seeing directly into the room? Either way we had to have it open due to the smell. We then went into the bathroom to find mould growing on the back wall, not surprising since the extractor fan was about as useful as an inflatable dartboard. We then later noticed paint bubbling on the ceiling and water dripping down the bedroom wall. This is obviously a problem with the roof that needs to be resolved and not what anyone would expect when staying in a Hotel (this has been a problem for a while as their had been no heavy rain in the area for a while so should be no water). At this point we were getting tired as we had been travelling all day so decided to go out for something to eat before returning for a good night?s sleep. Leaving the room we were met by the smell of someone smoking in the rooms 2 doors down (I know it was this room as we saw them from looking out of our window). We thought we could try to speak to a member of management in the morning and see if there was some way we could resolve some of the issues we had with the room.Upon return we turned on the television to find no smart TV functions, this was stated in the welcome book and on the website, and only had signal to a very limited number of Freeview channels. The bed we stayed in was the most uncomfortable bed either of us have ever slept in and safe to say neither of us got hardly any rest. We woke in the morning both aching in our necks and backs and completely worn out from lack of sleep.I came down in the morning hoping to speak to someone who would hopefully deal with some of the complaints to be told no management would be in until mid-day and there was nothing anyone on shift could do!After the shocking night we had experienced we decided we did not want to wait around as we had a very long drive home and could not face staying in the room again.I asked to be refunded for my stay as this was not what you would expect at all, and I did not want to pay £10 to have to park again waiting around for someone to be able to help. I have to say the reply is laughable...We sorry for the negative experience you had at our hotel last weekAccording to our CCTV footage You were given a booking document with the first line stating.PROBLEMS WITH THE ROOMS MUST BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELYHad you come straight back to the office instead of spending your time in taking pictures and not accepted the room we would have done our best to give you an upgraded room or a full refund. We are unable to give any refunds as the hotel rules were not followed and the room was not rejected immediately as stated in our checking in document.I can understand not been able to give a refund but the fact that I have stated mould in the rooms and damp through the roof, and this has not even been acknowledged by management is disgusting! Even the member of staff on duty was embarrassed that the room was in that state and apologised that he couldn't help me further. As I was not happy with the response I have called the hotel today and been told that it is solely my fault for not reporting it immediately as the piece of paper they give me stated I had to do so. I explained that we had been travelling for over 7 hours and had been told the paper was the receipt for the extra £10 for a Friday night stay so did not read this immediately, maybe yes we should have, but that does not make a mouldy room my fault, or any of the other issues.

The hotel is right in the centre of town so it?s a good location. The service was very friendly and the price was competitive for an August stay in Devon.Unfortunately the hotel is tired, scruffy and in need of a revamp. The decor rooms and bar are dated and tatty. The rooms were also scruffy and a bit dilapidated. It reminded us of holidays from childhood, but not in a good way.The hotel is also dog friendly. Fine if you like or own dogs but if you are allergic, not so great. This is all a real shame because the hotel could be amazing.
