This was the best hotel of our entire 4 week trip around the uk. Great location, charming building, helpful staff. The only downside was no aircon in the middle of a heatwave. Would definitely stay here again

Visited on a business trip and just stayed at the hotel, without breakfast as breakfast was so expensive! But it?s not far from other places offering a cheap breakfast and is ideally located near the town. The rooms are comfortable and modern, which contrasts the classical style of the rest of the communal areas. They have lemon, cucumber, fruit and plain flavoured water in the lobby which was yummy. The hotel used to be an old Manor House, which they?ve now divided the bigger rooms into lots of hotel rooms. This creates a maze to find your room and blends fancy staircases with servants staircases. A unique feel.

Uncomfortable lumpy bed , the room was so hot & stuffy (no air con) and with the window open there is constant noise from I think a boiler exhaust howling away all night Also the hallway outside our room smelled of urine . Don?t bother booking here if you like sleeping

Pros - local to town - very near railway station - dinner options are ok - standard breakfast options - reception staff lovely and welcoming - amenities in room included dryer, iron and ironing board, kettle - some beautiful historical items and info Cons - dirty plates and cups at breakfast - could access next doors room** - loud - no air con - bathroom towel dirty - mislabelled as mr on breakfast booking - one of the servers at breakfast was quite rude and dismissive ( all I did was say that some of the glass bits from her dropping and smashing a glass had reached the platform just incase she didn?t observe it as it was a distance from the rest of the larger pieces). The manager and new colleague was nice enough. - floorboards creaky and doors slam The receptionist on arrival was really welcoming and nice. I was offered one or two keys which is nice as most don?t offer it. Lift available to my floor although there was still steps to my room but that wasn?t a problem. Got to the room. Spacious fairly clean except for the bathroom towels which had brown marks on them. Plenty of plugs in place, including next to the bed and near the desk so I could do some work. There was a door in the room with a bolt. Me being nosy took a look at the other side. Turns out if I wanted to I could access next doors room. From a safety perspective and female travelling alone perspective this wasn?t good. Fortunately I was on the side that opened into next door not the side that got opened into. There was also a large gap at the bottom of the door which meant I could hear everything and I?m assuming they could also hear my television and conversations. The bed was uncomfortable especially in the heat with no air conditioning. There was fans provided but these just circulated hot air. Meaning I had to keep the window open. This made it horrific from 4am in the morning where there was constant slamming and clattering of vans being offloaded, items being moved around the hotel floor and a noise that I can only describe as constant chopping. Nothing wrong with the food except that it took me ten minutes trying to find a clean cup and bowl and the location is very central to town but I think I?d rather walk and The travel a further distance to actually be able to sleep. Overall not ideal for someone travelling for business from a sleep and noise perspective. ** since writing this review and on check out the receptionist at the desk mentioned that I had an adjoining family room and if someone is booked in that room that the room next door to it is left vacant. They?ve made a note to remind others to inform customers of this when assigning those rooms to ease concern

This is a fine old building, conveniently located across the road from Exeter Central station so a few minutes walk from the city centre. Staff are helpful and friendly, if not always on the ball. I'd upgraded to a 'privilege' room, spacious but a bit on the minimalist side. There was a dearth of literature on the hotel. To close my door, it was necessary to slam it shut; fortunately I had no occasion to do so late at night when others might have been trying to sleep. I was on db&b terms. Dinner was in Drakes Bar which rather lacked atmosphere as there were hardly any other diners. The meals were not wonderful, nor were they awful. The menu is fashionably divided between 'small plates' and 'large plates'. What's wrong with 'starters' and 'mains'? The waitress actually asked whether I wanted the two together or separately; my response might be guessed! 'Chef's katsu chicken' was tasty though a more generous amount of sauce would have been good. A soup starter, sorry small plate, was lukewarm but my requested that it be heated up was swiftly complied with - and it was good soup. Breakfast, taken in a different location, was very good, a buffet will well cooked food and a good choice.

Awful hotel, stayed one night and then left, even though we had booked for several nights. The room was not as advertised even though I had checked with the hotel manager before we arrived. One receptionist tried her best, the other did not want to know.

We stayed in double room with another double bed through a joined door in same room, which was brilliant. Slept the three of us plus our dog. Room cost £121 for night plus breakfast for all of us next day. Dogs not allowed in main restaurant. But was put in bar area which was just as nice and quiet. Just short walk then to the buffet area. Breakfast was spot on! Worth every penny. Kids eat free with every paid adult meal, £15 per adult. Parking is expensive though. We parked in train station across the road from hotel. Which was £17.60. Parking @ hotel. But very limited spaces. But I think there?s extra charge for parking in hotel too £12 night? There?s Five Guy?s restaurant just across road too which was handy. Service in hotel was amazing and friendly. Would highly recommend if looking for hotels that allow dogs

Lovely service from start to finish, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They made sure the room was perfect for us. The hotel is located in the centre of Exeter near a co op for buying snacks for the kids, lovely cafes for breakfast and lots of choice for lunch or evening meals within 5 minutes walk.!

Pros - great location - lovely building - comfy beds - friendly staff - clean Cons - parking is £12.00 per day extra( how ever you would pay that parking in town) - dated interior - old building so creaky floor boards The worst thing about this hotel is how hot the rooms are at night we stayed in 132 even though we had a fan we were all boiling ? . If there was air con we would stay again .
