It was a disappointing experience unfortunately. However the ladies who work at the hotel in the mornings are lovely and do go out of their way to help but let down by the absence of the manager / owner. The issues started at check-in - apparently the email containing important details (ie door / access code) were sent to us midday before check in. I don?t have an account with the 3rd party provider we booked through but had received emails from the property prior to this so not sure why this one didn?t come through. What wasn?t obvious when we booked is the ?hotel? is entirely self-service check-in and check-out. So having not received the door code we found the door bell wasn?t working and the phone number provided was switched off and went straight to voicemail. When the owner called us she raised twice that she?d sent me the details via the 3rd party and said I?d responded to them. I had emailed the hotel via the 3rd party booking provider when we couldn?t gain entry by responding to an old reservation email, not the check-in email so no idea what happened. She seemed more concerned about defending the email she?d said had definitely been sent rather than getting us into the hotel. As it?s self service check-in please be aware if you have any mobility issues or heavy luggage there will be no assistance and no one at the property if your arrival is after 3pm.We rounded off the week with no chef availability on the last morning. We were deducted an amount off the bill for the breakfast, which is fine in theory, but unfortunately the amount deducted wasn?t enough to buy a full English and coffee in the venue they recommended. I did try to raise this with the owner but as we were told we had to pay a day in advance (again due to lack of staff availability) I never received a call back.Overall the air bnb nature of the venue made it feel overpriced for what we got (especially with breakfast cancelled on the last day) and it feels like the owners want to run a remote operation with zero management or support for the staff that are there and working really hard. Would not recommend and will not stay again.

2006 was the last time we visited and stayed in this lovely place? so clean and so loved, the young lady who helped us to the room also cooked our breakfast . And what a quality breakfast it was. This sweet Hotel is in a league of its own, please don?t introduce technology to this Gem of Matlock bath.??Rooms: Top Class rooms.

So pleased we chose this hotel, a gem of a find. It is a veritable time capsule, all the decor down to the smallest detail gives it a very 1920?s feel, the building it?self has been around well over 200 years and is seeped in history. Our room was immaculately clean, the antique furniture and portraits lending to the ambience, and the bed was very comfortable indeed. The included breakfast was plentiful, the staff catered for my vegetarian wife without fuss, even surprised her with veggie bacon! From initial booking to departure the staff were super friendly and were excellent with their communications. Located right on the front, overlooking the river Derwent, it is ideally located, and having an allocated parking space just up the hill is a real bonus. I would have expected some traffic noise in the room as we were front facing, but happily there was none.Highly recommended and would definitely book again.

Cosy hotel run by really helpful and friendly hosts. The hotel has a lot of history and retains many original features. We had a clean and comfortable room and excellent breakfasts. What more can you ask for. Highly recommended.

Absolutely stunning place to stay. Nothing can be faulted. Beautiful room and everything was perfect. Central location and the bonus of a carpark. Lovely hosts that make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive and the choice of breakfast is amazing. ?

Had a great stay here. The room was perfect for my wife and I. We had a great view of the river. The saff were really friendly and helpfull. Especially with discounts for local attractions. Hotel was very reasonably priced. My only dissatisfaction and its nothing to do with the hotel or staff but the mainly motorcyclists using the main road like a race track. I'm a biker myself but would never ride in such a built up area as some of these were, I saw several close calls. Was surprised to find 9 Fish&Chip shops 2 arcades and a couple of sweet shops in about 400 meters.Other than thatbit was a great place to stay, close to the attractions and only a short walk, drive or bus journey to restaurants and attractions.Rooms: Very nice.Nearby activities: Heights of Abrahams a short walk plus lovers walk very close.Noteworthy details: On certain days you can get lots of bikers (motorcycle)

Myself and my friend stayed for a couple of nights. The hotel is styled like an old Victorian property, making it much more interesting than a boring hotel chain. We loved the interesting displays and antiques around the communal areas. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable with all amenities you could wish for, including little extra touches such as toiletries, complimentary slippers and dressing gowns The bed and pillows were extremely comfy, I slept so well both nights. The hosts, Zoe and Chris were extremely helpful and welcoming, they answered any questions we had about the local area, recommended places to visit and also printed off some great walks that we enjoyed doing. The hotel is located right in the middle of Matlock bath, and there?s ample parking for guests. The breakfast was delicious, you could tell the ingredients were high quality . Really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend

Beautiful Matlock Bath next to the River Derwent... so pretty. We stayed at Hodgkinsons Hotel for extended weekend, & a fab stay it was!Chris & Zoe were very welcoming & nothing was too much trouble. This is a listed building so is quirky & quaint with History apparent, yet is comfortable, beautifully decorated, with all you could wish for. Each room is very individual. We stayed in the "BRETBY".Delightfully olde worlde but with all modern convenience. Top quality Tea/Coffee, Hot Choc/biscuits, provided also loose tea & fresh coffee with cafetiere!Slippers & dressing gowns also provided & we were in a classic double. Linen was crisp & fresh. Room was warm & comfortable & was spotlessly clean. Must also mention two so comfy armchairs! Made me actually SIT IN MY ROOM! Breakfast was wonderful beautifully presented with a very substantial choice. Everything from Full English to Eggs benedict- all cooked to perfection. Cereal fresh fruit salad also! Local ingredients wherever possible. Excellent. Allocated parking ensures you have your very own space! Invaluable on a busy weekend!Stay Here. Lovely place. Nicer people. Thankyou & see you again!.

Have just spent a wonderful weekend at Hodgkinsons Hotel along with other family members to celebrate a 70th birthday. Zoe & Chris are excellent hosts & did everything they possibly could to make our visit so enjoyable. The rooms have everything one could need. The beds were extremely comfortable & I am very fussy on this. Rarely do I find such comfortable beds away from home. There was an excellent choice of foods available on both the breakfast & dinner menus including vegetarian & gluten free options. We will be back again in the future!

Me and my wife arrived here on Friday 21st April for a 2 night stay. It is a lovely oldy worldy hotel, with alot of original features still on show and alot of history behind it which we found really interesting and nice. The couple who run the hotel are very approachable and very helpful. The room we had i.e the Mayfield room was a large room at the front of the hotel with nice views of Matlock Bath. The bed itself was really comfy, and we both had a good night's sleep. The breakfast was really nice as well with just enough on our plate. Would we recommend this hotel yes 100%. Thank you for a lovely stay and hopefully we will be back again one day to visit your lovely hotel. Simon and Christine Finch

This charming hotel did not disappoint. The antique decor and history make this a lovely place to stay and enjoy quirky Matlock Bath and the Peak District p Our bedroom ( Callow ) was spacious , well equipped and very comfortable. ( even bath robes and slippers were provided ) . Breakfast was relaxed and the food was perfect . (The one small niggle for us was the shower head was a bit high creating too much cold water and the controls were not easy to use from outside the cubicle )
