Didnt try food. Bar from 1950/60s era but well stocked with wines (viognier) and ciders as well as beer straight from the barrel ( in a jug). On a hot sunny day the interior is a bit dark and outside seating limited. But when the bartender goes to the piano ... WOW!

A 1750?s pub in a grade II listed building in ?the middle of nowhere?. And it?s like no-where you?ve pubbed before either. The sign outside is missing; you could easily miss the whole place. The pub consists of three small rooms: parlour, old kitchen and main bar.
You?ll be asked if you want a handled mug/glass for your pint; Not so long ago, gravity dispensed beer and cider was served from barrels inside the small counter/hatch. Yesterday (March 2025), the server ?disappeared? through a door into a basement(?) for the serving, thus a little of the charm is lost.
We ordered sandwiches. Service (with four other customers) was very slow, but eventually delicious and worth the wait.
No car park, but on-road car parking is no problem in this small isolated village.

Lovely old pub. Great service, wine not good.

As I'm staying in the area I just had to revisit this old place. Probably nearly 30 years since I was last here. (And what a mad time that was, my mate lived in the village and we were always in the bar as soon as it was opened... usually before heading into Ashbourne and getting silly drunk).
Anyway it's how I remembered it. And still jugs instead of taps. Wonderful. And good beers. Brought back some good memories.

A comfortable and warm respite following a bike ride around Carsington Water.Easily missed at the top of the very well kept village. Ale poured from the jug, and enjoyed next to the open fire.
