Jackie, Steve and family were so welcoming. Every day it was like coming 'home'. Rooms have a bed and a bathroom, coffee/tea making facilities and a TV. The pub was the ideal base for us to explore the North and the Lakes for a few days. Food at the Black Swan was of a really high standard, superb. We will definitely return. Very good value for money.Nearby activities: Visiting this area in February mid week did mean that a lot of things we would've visited were closed - the National Trust properties (except the outdoor ones) and the castles nearby only opened at weekend or later in March, so we drove from place to place and walked around Carlisle, Penrith, Keswick and Kendal.Walkability: If you are a walker, this is a great spot to use as a base to explore the area.Food & drinks: Breakfast was lovely, cereal and a cooked breakfast to set you up for the day with the choice of juice and tea or coffee. Evening meals were from a small menu, which did change for the weekend, and the small menu meant the meals cooked were done very well. Large portions (in fact my only criticism would be that there was too much!) I couldn't stop eating because the food was so tasty.

Interior feels like a hotel lobby so more of a bar than a pub. Plus were showing rugby on a large screen. Nice stout on tap.

Black great is a great local pub. The service is outstanding, super friendly, and really everyone has a massive smile and wants you to relax and enjoy yourself. Loved sitting down and having a drink whikst we waited to he seated in the dining room, really relaxing and comfortable. The food is also brilliant big portions, and lovley accompaniments with chips, tempura brocholi, veg and duphinoise potatoes that are amazing. If you are a local in cumbria, pay it a visit you won't regret it.Food & drinks: Food was outstanding, really delicious, and we loved the variety.

Booked on the spur of the moment on Friday morning as we wanted a weekend to chill out. The reason why I chose the black Swan was due to the positive reviews, and it certainly did not let us down. It was very relaxing and the food was first class compliments to all the staff .Food & drinks: Compliment to the chef the food was excellent.

This is a review of the restaurant only, but I am sure staying at the Black Swan would be a pleasure. We dropped on spec for Sunday lunch. They fitted us in and we enjoyed one of the best lunches for many a long day. We had the roast beef . Portions were generous vegetables nicely cooked and presented on very hot plates. I wish we lived closer. Prices were reasonable too. If I am being ultra critical, personally I prefer my roast potatoes a bit crispy round the edges. Would I go again- you bet but we move on tomorrow!

The Black Swan is a pleasant pub in a quiet village setting. The staff were friendly and the place was spotless. But avoid room seven if you can. Though large and comfortable, a huge kitchen extractor fan right outside our window roared like a jet engine! Fortunately it had been switched off by mid evening. The food was disappointing and overpriced. Chicken Masala, obviously not made fresh, was £19 and bland. My wife's mushroom stroganoff contained pork. Fortunately she's not vegetarian. Breakfast has to be ordered the night before with a time specified. Ours was still served nearly half an hour late, leaving us rushing to make a ferry on our onward journey. So overall the message is "could do better."

Friendly, welcoming small hotel. Convenient stopping-off point near the M6 if driving from London to Scotland. Husband and wife owners who prepare the food on the premises and serve it themselves. Great food and plenty of it. Lots of nice touches around the food and rooms (like getting tap water without asking for it). Beer's good too!
