Good location, friendly staff, beer was ok, could do with a better atmosphere

Booked a table online and received an email the day before asking me to confirm we were going. We were looking forward to the Sunday roast as shown on the websit. I replied yes to the email. We arrived and was told that there is no table reserved as they could not access the booking portal but to grab a table. We asked about the Sunday lunch and was informed that they were not doing it. A very poor way to treat customers, they could have put a sign up to state this to save us from standing for 10 minutes waiting to be served. We went down the road and found another pub serving Sunday roast, standing at the bar was the same couple who stood in front of us at the Bull, another customer who was let down badly as they had also booked.

Food are delicious. Nice vibe and busy at Friday night. Would come back for tasting menu next time. Nice town and defo come back one day! Need book the table in advance.

We as a family of 3 booked to stay over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend firstly the price was brilliant for what probably is Kirkby Stephens busiest weekend of the year. Secondly the we could book in early and head to the room to drop out bags off whilst the room was slightly dated it was exceptionally clean and well appointed with quality tea coffees snacks bedding and towels couldn't have asked for more at the price. The food was really good pub food but the breakfasts were another level brilliant! Good pub type atmosphere in the bar of you wanted it a little quieter you could go sit in the dining side. The staff were great & friendly and the couple who host the Black Bull were honestly amazing nothing was too much trouble so friendly and welcoming felt like a regular after 3 days :) thank you so much for enhancing our stay. If you want a budget friendly hotel in Kirkby Stephen look no further. We will be back again probably before next Easter

Had a meal here after looking online at the menu ( it sounded lovely and lots of choice, just what we were looking for). How disappointed we were. The starters and main meal scampi weren't crispy as expected. Everything was sodden with fat. The pub is grubby and flies constantly around as we were trying to eat. Would not return.

Lovely calm, relaxed atmosphere and very welcoming pub. Staff were lovely and really helpful. We had lunch, the food was delicious and the portions were big. Good, proper pub food! We will definitely come here again the next time we are passing through!

Me and my group of 13 people came for a meal yesterday and had a great time. We were very well catered for and the staff were happy to oblige additions to the meal that we had pre ordered. Big shoutout to the barman who did everything he could for us to enjoy our meal. We?ll come again if we?re ever in the area!

We were passing through on our motorbikes and looking for somewhere to warm up, have a brew and a piece of cake.
It's only a small place and all the tables were full but a lovely kind couple offered their table to share and sit at. Coffees and cake were promptly served, Paper towel and Visor cleaner provided for our helmets which was a nice friendly touch. We were made to feel very welcome and food and drinks were not only very nice but also very reasonable.
Highly recommended if you're in the area, Staff were very friendly, polite and efficient.
Thank you for your hospitality
It was much appreciated and needed on a chilly day, it made a huge difference to us on our journey home.
