Food is really dissipointing, tastless and overpriced. We ordered Tomahawk steak, not worth the price. Mac and cheese was nice though.
Innitial customer service was great, until we got seared, once we ordered food, we were not asked if everything was ok and if we needed anything.
We were seated by the kitchen, very loud, can hear waitresses talking and cutlery smashing.
Would not recommend.

Upstairs at the Grill 100 percent over delivered in every aspect. The staff are warm friendly and packed full of knowledge. Bringing the different cuts and giving an explanation of the steaks was a great touch.
The steak tarta was incredible. Definitely a must have.

Overall we had a really nice evening here, but, considering the price point, I would expect perfection, and it was not perfect.
Positives: really interesting menu options. Although this is primarily a steak restaurant I was able to have something I'd never had before: a carrot tartare, and this was really interesting and tasty. The other starters of soup and the soufflé were also really good. The members of the party that did eat steak said overall it was great (partner said it was in his top 3 of all time). Mac and cheese and creamed spinach were delicious. Service was exceptional and really attentive, they talked through the whole menu with us and gave recommendations, and even brought out the cuts of meat we could have to assist in us choosing. Our water was kept topped up without asking. I liked the vibe of the venue with the little individual lamps on tables so you could control your own light levels. I also liked being taken to the separate bar area to have a drink while we ordered.
Negatives: two of our party ordered steaks medium, and one medium rare. One of the medium steaks was the rarest we had, even rarer than the medium rare steak and it put her off eating it. Sure we could have complained but I would expect somewhere like this to get the steak cookery right? My cauliflower main was cooked fine on the edges but inside was too hard, I'm used to al dente and happy with that but it was borderline raw. Dauphinois potatoes needed more salt. Salt and vinegar onion rings needed more salt and vinegar- they just tasted like plain onion rings. The desserts were definitely style over substance. Supposedly brownie was meant to be in the chocolate galaxy but it was just a few dry crumbs in the bottom half.

Fantastic food and amazing value for lunch time. Very impressive wine list. Courteous and smooth service. We had a slight issue and was handled swiftly and professionally to our satisfaction. Highly recommended.

The staff was absolutely amazing, the waitress that took care of our table (I think her name was Liv) was very funny and made the whole experience even better. All of the staff knew a lot about the food and drinks, which helped with choosing what to order.
The food itself was amazing, the portions seem small but they're very filling.
I would 100% recommend Upstairs at the Grill, especially if you have something special to celebrate. It is pricey, but the staff makes you feel special and the food is worth it.

I booked in for the evening as it was my boyfriend?s birthday and we couldn?t put a single fault to anything!! We were seated on the terrace and had amazing service throughout, especially from Liv who looked after us amazingly all through our stay. The sun set and the personalised birthday card was a lovely subtle touch!! We are still thinking about the steak ? we can?t wait to return xxx

Everything about the place is outstanding... from the cocktails and the serve, and wow, the food is something special and presention is amazing! The best steak I've had and the tomato salad and haggis fritters were excellent sides.

This place was absolutely excellent.
first rate on pretty much everything.
The cheese soufflé started was a real stand out for us.
as well as the salt and vinegar onion rings.
quality and execution of the meat was beyond reproach.

We had an absolutely amazing anniversary meal here last night, service was outstanding from everyone, drinks were delicious and the food was stunning...chicken salt fries were a revelation. We can't wait to come back

Picturesque, intimate steak restaurant in the heart of Chester. We all had the Sunday roast which was the best roast I?ve ever eaten. The interior design was pleasant and all staff were very friendly and professional. We ate in the upstairs private dining room for 7 which is ideal for larger groups. The sticky toffee for dessert was delicious, complimented by their Isles whiskey coffee.
