Unfortunately this place is now a asylum seekers residence. Shame, although it was pretty tired looking it was a handy place for a pint while waiting for a train. Can't really blame them, im guessing the tax payer is paying them an absolute fortune now.

This hotel, like many ?Best Westerns? is an absolute disgrace. Run down, lack of staff and general sense of grot. Avoid at all costs, although you won?t be able to stay here any time soon as it?s yet another from the chain being used by Serco..Be careful if using the nearby Waitrose, the current residents of this hotel have decided that?s also free to them!

Old, dusty uncomfortable room. Dark and cold. Tired.Staff however were lovely and worked hard to look after the group I was with.

Tv didn?t work in the room. They said they would fix it so I went out to meet friends. When I came back mid evening it still didn?t work. I was given a different room. Guess what? The tv didn?t work!! I was told to like it or lump it. Delightful??!! I lumped it.

DO NOT VISIT THIS HOTEL. The corridors smell of old cigarette smoke and rooms are grubby but that's not the worst. Firstly the car park is ticketed in and out. There is no daily rate for guests so, although the rate for 24hrs is £15 for Mon- Fri and £5 for Sat - Sun, you pay every time you go out so you end up paying much more. We paid £5 for overnight then £1 an hour when we came back in the afternoon then overnight on Sun -Mon we got charged £17. Again, that's not the worst. On arrival, we were told breakfast was from 8am till 10am. On Saturday, we went down and were treated to the most awful, overcooked, dried up full English we have ever encountered. It looked and tasted like it had been cooked the night before and left in an oven. On Sunday, we came down to be told they'd run out of milk so only black tea and coffee was available and cereal would have to be dry. There is a Waitrose 30 seconds walk away from the hotel! I tried waffles that day- they were sugar waffles from a packet. On Monday, we went down at 9.10am to find the place closed. I asked about breakfast and was told it was 7am till 9am on weekdays. When I said we weren't told that, the receptionist said sorry, you should have been. No offer to get us so much as a bowl of cereal. I didn't argue about it because the breakfasts we'd already had weren't worth the effort. This hotel makes Fawlty Towers look 5 star- at least it was clean! This hotel could be so much more with a central location right next to shops and the train station, but lazy disinterested staff and shambolic mismanagement make it an expensive joke of an establishment. We used Tesco Clubcard points to pay for the hotel so didn't pay any physical money - even then, we were overcharged. This hotel doesn't deserve even one star. There really should be a zero star option.

I'd love to give this hotel a better review. Sadly I had two badly disturbed nights. The first due to a drunken argument outside my window and the second due to a couple very publicly splitting up at 2am in the corridor outside my room. The key cards sporadically stop working which locked me out of my room twice and the actual hotel once. Also, the bathroom sink blocked on my final morning. However, the staff are lovely and the hotel itself is retains its historic railway charm.

The rooms are rather spacious for king size room. It's fairly handy being right across the rd from the train station and also a 2 second walk to Waitrose. 5 minute walk to town centre, which is good. Also next door us the police station.Safety: The stair railing is weak at the bottom of the stairs case, no staff actually mentioned it but it could cause an accident !Noteworthy details: The main entrance is quite cramped with fairly quick revolving doors...be careful !

They are so understaffed it's ridiculous, one staff memeber for bookong, working the bar etc, our room wasn't set up and they hadn't put the travel cot up for our toddler and got told they wouldn't be able to put one up till 10pm it wasn't put up till half 10 we travelled two hours to get here and he wanted to sleep. The breakfast was good but a lot of it wasn't available no waffles not vegetarian Sausages for the veggie breakfast. The light in the bathroom was hanging off the beds were extremely uncomfortable. I definitely won't be staying again. The room was pretty but so many faults for the rest of the hotel.

Room was scruffy & looked un cleaned there was dust everywhere. Bed was shocking, bathroom was dirty, shower walls were full of cracks and just filled with sand & cement but at least it worked. Bar was closed & the kitchen was closed. 2 rats also ran across me as I walked around the side of the building. Won't be staying here again & I wouldn't recommend to anyone. The only good thing about this hotel is that its by the train station.

My daughter in law booked a special room as part of my 8th birthday celebration. Got to the room in the evening to find no electricity in the room and couldn't be fixed until the morning. The building looks like it needs a refurbishment. Wouldn't stay there again

If I could give this place a negative zero rating I would, absolutely disgraceful place, keep your money and spend it at the local Travelodge or Premier Inn instead, that would feel like the Ritz compared to this place. I paid good money for a room for the night which was dirty and rundown and not worth the £80ish pounds paid, long wait at breakfast for food and then the bread was stale for my apparently freshly made sandwich, this was run by a man who I then discovered was the manager.Thankfully for us there were good food places to eat across the road, so for lunch and evening meals we chose to eat at the city centre. The car park and grounds are absolutely full of rats, they are not at all scared of humans and will just come right up to you. These are not small rats either! At night it is like being in a horror film they are absolutely everywhere outside the hotel in the grounds and car parks and right outside the doors. The outside area is very unkempt and due to being dirty with glasses and old food left out, is even more an attraction for the homeless and the rats. There seems to be very poor management here, I think this once beautiful hotel could do with a whole new refresh of management and staff. Embarassment to the Best Western brand.

Not good - bed wasn?t made. Room was like a sauna. Breakfast was questionable and possibly made by the night porter - bless him he tried hard. Cigarette ends everywhere on the grounds - doesn?t take much to clear that up. Thankfully was only here for work, never to return !

The hotel is really convenient for the station however the car park is overrun with RATS and has been for a while. I telephoned the company that provides carpark machines etc and they informed me that the actual carpark belongs to the hotel. Really think they need to remove all the flower beds etc so rats can't hide !! And so rubbish doesnt collect at the bottom of bushes. This problem puts you off staying at hotel.

Shockingly bad all round! Unkempt. Rats everywhere ! As for a wedding venue the lack of attention to any detail was unnerving. The management didnt recognise the bride and groom! Food was not even a 2 and hence left my meal on plate almost untouched. I feel the the staff cos management just wasnt there nor appropriately dealt with. Aa for the room.. was ok till needing bathroom. It was like faulty towers... the shower unit connected to taps literally lifted out of the bathroom unit ! Its such a shame aa the hotel has potential but it's looking exceptional tired..the decor needs a lot of attention. Didnt need to look for dust .. apparent everywhere..most concerning...outside space needs a makeover and could at least sweep around as broken glass everywhere too. Rats were a true problem with no sight of traps anywhere. Bar.. not functional ! Not had change when open. Overall a very poorly ran hotel that I would never consider returning to or recommending. Anyone thinking of booking here.. run !

The positives... I liked the 1930s wood panelling and art deco door frames. I loved the little cubby holes for the kettle and cups and the ironing board. Bed was comfy. I didn't use the TV (so can't comment). There was also a hairdryer and a small safe box. The staff were lovely. Whatever the stresses of their day, whenever I asked a question or needed help, they smiled at me and helped. Very clean. The breakfast was great. I didn't have dinner there, so can't comment. There was a fan in the room. It was perfectly located for the railway station; the bus station and queensgate shopping centre. Most places were within a 15 minute walk...eg the River Bank, the Cathedral. It was very good value for money. I'd stay there again. The negatives... WiFi signal in my room wasn't great (weak signal); I can sleep through a hurricane, but if you can't it's not a quiet location...trains, and road noise. The views are car park, shopping centre, waitrose. Even so, I really enjoyed staying there.
