Follow-up Review for PureGym
I am writing this as a follow-up to my previous review. Today, I requested my wife to call the same manager regarding the long-standing issue of air conditioning in the gym. He came to where I was exercising, visibly disgruntled, and when I raised the issue of inadequate air conditioning, his response was dismissive.
He insisted the air conditioning was working, to which I pointed out that it only works in a limited section of the gym. His advice was that I should ?leave the place where I was exercising and go where it works properly.? I reminded him that this is unfair?especially when the gym is full and members should not have to chase cooler spots in what is meant to be a professionally managed fitness facility.
I also reminded him that I had already written a review about this problem, and asked, ?I?m sure you must have read it?? He confirmed that he had. Yet, despite acknowledging awareness of my complaint, his attitude was still defensive and dismissive rather than empathetic or solution-oriented.
I further highlighted the potential health risks: if a member suffers from heatstroke or collapses due to inadequate ventilation, the liability does not simply disappear. His response was, ?not me.? For his information, under UK law, liability can extend to the operator and the manager acting as an agent of the business.
As a qualified lawyer (abroad) with knowledge of UK law, I would like to remind PureGym of the following:
? Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers and operators of facilities have a duty to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of employees and members. Adequate ventilation and temperature control are part of this duty.
? The Occupiers? Liability Act 1957 places a duty of care on those who operate premises to ensure that visitors are reasonably safe while using them. Allowing members to exercise in unsafe, overheated conditions could amount to a breach of this duty.
? The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires that services be provided with reasonable care and skill. Failing to maintain a properly functioning air-conditioned environment, which is an essential feature of a modern gym, may amount to a breach of consumer rights.
Furthermore, raising a concern about health, safety, or service quality should never be treated as an inconvenience, nor should it result in a member being made to feel unwelcome, denied services, or subjected to discriminatory treatment. Exercising one?s right to complain is protected under UK consumer law and should be met with professionalism and respect?not dismissiveness. Hopefully, I will not be denied services on account of voicing these legitimate concerns.
The manager?s attitude throughout was defensive and dismissive. Instead of offering solutions, showing empathy, or even apologising for the inconvenience caused, he kept insisting there was ?nothing he could do? and shifted the burden onto members. Even when I suggested that managing a gym properly starts with listening to customer complaints, he mockingly responded, ?manage what??
This is not the level of professionalism fee-paying members deserve. Customers do not pay monthly fees to hear excuses, to exercise drenched in sweat, or to risk heat-related health issues.
I strongly urge PureGym to take immediate steps to address this problem properly. £50,000 may be required for improvements, as your manager claims, but surely a proper inspection and air distribution assessment should have been conducted before opening the facility. Members are entitled to a safe, comfortable, and professionally managed environment?not dismissive responses, excuses, or poor service.

Probably one of the best gyms I?ve been to so far Easy access to get into the gym, the Equipment is really good loads of different machines, even machines I?ve not seen and everything is very spaced out. I would?ve rated it five stars but i?m not a fan of the showers in the locker room I showered in there today and every single shower had lots of hair on the floor it was very dirty

Pure gym does get busy in the evenings and it takes a while to park up, so you have to allow more time for parking if you have a class. The gym is very well equipped, they have so many different types of equipment for working out different muscle groups. The classes are great, the instructors are friendly and push you.

Decent gym, lots of equipmentHowever - ?day? passes are per calendar, not 24 hours - so if you go at night, you have to phone the emergency number in order to get out again. And there was a group of people filming wide angles with a whole tripod-camera set up which made me uncomfortable.
