The Buckingham Old Gaol is a real gem for history lovers. The exhibits are well presented, with plenty of interesting stories about the building’s past. Staff were welcoming and happy to answer questions. A great way to spend an afternoon.

built in 1748, originally served as a prison and was funded by Richard Grenville Temple, Lord Viscount of Cobham. Its construction, with crenellations and arrow-slits, was intended to resemble a castle, reflecting Buckingham's ambition to regain its status as the county town and host the Summer Assizes.

Well worth a visit. Very informative staff, great information at hand and a easy visit. Loved this town and the Old Gaol.

The iconic Old Gaol at the heart of the charming market town of Buckingham. With our stout castle walls built back in 1748, our building oozes character, inside and out.
Explore the cells where poachers, drunks and even the odd murderer were banged up. Find out who managed to escape, and how. Enjoy our museum exhibits taking in two millennia of local history, from the time of the dinosaurs to the 1980s.
