We spent a delightful Christmas week at The Elephant, using it as our home base while visiting family in Caversham. Spacious, quiet room and well-appointed bathroom (with oversized heated towel rack which came in handy for wet walking clothes), and delicious meals, both breakfast and dinner. Easy access to trains to London, as well as walking paths. Very pleased with our stay!

We were married here in June 2023 and had exclusive use of the venue on the day and night of the wedding. From the day of our first enquiry about using the venue we felt very looked after. In most part this was down to Claire, the resident wedding coordinator. Her patience, communication and exceptional organisation really made the planning of the day so easy and stress free. Many of our family stayed the night before the wedding and everyone felt looked after for the whole weekend. We have a number of members of the family with dietary requirements and the hotel managed the complexities of these with ease and no fuss, which really made us feel cared for. On the day, all the staff could not have been more helpful. Everything was seamlessly taken care of, from the food, the reorganisation of the rooms as the day went on and the service at the bar. It was all wonderful. We had approx. 110 guests and the hotel and the staff made this a truly special and memorable day which we are very thankful for. We are looking forward to returning to the hotel and the excellent steak restaurant to celebrate our future anniversaries!

Have been here a few times now, the most recent occasion for a wake. I was astonished at the lack of compassion shown at any point by the staff, from organising through to the event itself. The system to organise food for the day was unnecessarily complicated and vastly overpriced. We were even charged for someone to be on the bar when people arrived, despite it being a weekday afternoon. While the function room, bar area and garden are beautiful, I sadly won?t be rushing to return here.

Had our xmas meal here £95 a head so expected something special, boy were we disappointed. 15 of us so a good amount of money for them. Put in a boring room upstairs that had two strings of fairy lights across the ceilings, there only concession to xmas decorating apart from the crackers on the table. As for the food well I can only say it was not up to my previous visits to the restaurant which is why I booked the elephant, the soup yuk we all left it was like dark brown thick mud, the turkey was very round which would suggest a turkey roll, rather than a fresh whole turkey, we each had TWO whole roast potatoes each, ummmm so filling !! the Brussels had a very bitter strange taste and we each had a pile of parsnip?s just to make the plate look full. As the lead booking who recommended the place, based on previous visits I can only say it was a terrible decision and EVERYONE in my party has spoken to me about how bad the room was, the miserable experience and bad food, we all came out hungry something I thought was impossible to say after a xmas dinner. AWFUL BAD DONT EVER BOOK HERE FOR XMAS shoved in a room upstairs not even in the restaurant downstairs which no one told us about on booking. Luckily we all had a good sense of humour about the whole thing but that?s not the point on this occasion the hype did not live up to the expectations.

Second time being here. Lovely place and staff lovely. But put in the back room very cold eventhou had electric heater still cold. It's a shame as it was a Christmas dinner. Beautiful Christmas trees ? and atmosphere. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

My elderly father was locked out. No-one on reception so he was unable to get in. His clothes, toiletries and medication are all in his room, but he isn't. Unacceptable lack of service. Don't stay here.Safety: No-one on reception overnight in case of emergency.

Best Chicken and Chips I've ever tasted in my life. Such a simple meal, but when cooked right, OMG. I've stayed at hundreds of hotels over the years because of work, but The Elephant stood out. Lovely rooms. Great breakfast, good prices, a Hidden gem. The 2nd. The Wykeham Arms In Winchester. Pub, come hotels in England are the best places you will ever stay at. Not the big chains.Rooms: Olde WorldyFood & drinks: Wonderful

The positives are that the room was cosy & very comfortable. However, we were attending a wedding, when we returned to the hotel in the early hours of the morning to find we?d been locked out, no one on reception or answering the call buzzer that went directly to an EE mobile message which left no option of details or able to leave a message. We were very lucky that we had friends staying in the same hotel which we could contact and were able to let us in. Never experienced that in a hotel before. Then unbelievably the same thing happened again on the Sunday night, unfortunately this time we didn?t know of anyone staying in the hotel. Thankfully, the bride & groom live 15 minutes away from the hotel, so we walked back to theirs. When asking the manager, the next day what time was the curfew he explained there isn?t a curfew it?s all depending on who is still in the bar that night & if the bar staff is happy to stay on. At no point of our arrival was this lack of information was given to us.

Went to a 40th birthday party here last Saturday lovely hotel with a decent garden area. Had a super time, drink prices aren't that bad and if you going there in the evening the public car park next to the hotel is free to park in after 6

Ale in the bar was a poorly thought out selection and really wasn't kept in a good condition. Camra won't be beating down the door here for their Good Pub Guide recommendations. It seemed understaffed until 22:00 when it felt like the entire population of Pangbourne shouted last orders.I'm sure Chardonnay, Cristal, Cortney et al will love it for their dream "budget" wedding, but its a firm nope fron us.
